INTRODUCTION
• Nature cures, not the Physician. - Hippocrates
• The term was coined in 1885 by John Scheel. He was a German physician who
believed the body has an innate ability to heal itself.
• Modern naturopathy has its roots in the "natural healing" systems of the 18th and
19th-century under the Natural Cure Movement of Europe. The natural healing
systems are composed of "nature cures" that include using air, light, food, water,
and herbs . Hydrotherapy, a common practice in Germany, was also among the
natural cures and it involved using water for healing purposes.
• In 1901, Benedict Lust, a German hydrotherapist, bought the term "naturopathy"
from Scheel.
• Lust moved the concept of naturopathy from Germany to the United States of
America in 1901, after being sent there by his father to spread his drugless
medication tactics.
• Lust founded the first school of naturopathic medicine in the United States in
1901.
• Modern- Indian father of Naturopathy is Gandhiji.
• Father of Indian Naturopathy is Laxman Sharma.
• Western father of Naturopathy is Benedict Lust.

• It is a holistic system which believes that good health is not the same as the
absence of disease and that promoting a general state of wellbeing through
dietary principles, lifestyle, exercise and other techniques is an effective way
to manage our physiological systems. (British Naturopathic Association)
