BY : Dr. ANJANA

INTRODUCTION
• Nature cures, not the Physician. - Hippocrates

• Naturopathy is derived from Latin word Natura means nature and

Greek word Pathos means disease.

• It is a Natural therapy which treats disease.

• Naturopathy is a distinct primary health care system that stresses upon

the body’s self-healing mechanism.
The History Of Naturopathy
• The concept of the healing power of nature has been around for
centuries. It started in Greece 2,400 years ago and has been evolving
through the years to the naturopathy practised today.

• Hippocrates started the concept of naturopathic medicine 2,400 years

ago. He was a Greek physician who lived from 460-370 BC and is
traditionally known as the "father of medicine."
• The term naturopathy was created from two words, "natura" (a Latin word for
birth) and "pathos" (a Greek word for suffering). When the two terms are
combined directly, they translate to "natural healing".

• The term was coined in 1885 by John Scheel. He was a German physician who
believed the body has an innate ability to heal itself.

• Modern naturopathy has its roots in the "natural healing" systems of the 18th and
19th-century under the Natural Cure Movement of Europe. The natural healing
systems are composed of "nature cures" that include using air, light, food, water,
and herbs . Hydrotherapy, a common practice in Germany, was also among the
natural cures and it involved using water for healing purposes.
• In 1901, Benedict Lust, a German hydrotherapist, bought the term "naturopathy"
from Scheel.

• Lust moved the concept of naturopathy from Germany to the United States of
America in 1901, after being sent there by his father to spread his drugless
medication tactics.

• Naturopaths consider Benedict Lust as the father of naturopathy because he

introduced the concept in America.

• Lust founded the first school of naturopathic medicine in the United States in
1901.
• Modern- Indian father of Naturopathy is Gandhiji.
• Father of Indian Naturopathy is Laxman Sharma.
• Western father of Naturopathy is Benedict Lust.
DEFINITIONS

• Naturopathy is a form of therapy, which excludes medicinal and

surgical agents and depend entirely on natural forces such as light,
water, air, heat massage etc. (Butter worth medical dictionary)

prevention and the self-healing process through the use of natural
therapies. (American Association of Naturopathic Physicians)
• Naturopathy is the healing power of nature. (Steven Langley).

• Our body is made up of five elements i.e, earth water fire air and ether. The
imbalance among these is responsible for disease. The treatment of various
disease with the help of these five elements is called Naturopathy. (Ancient
Indian health science dictionary)

• It is a holistic system which believes that good health is not the same as the
absence of disease and that promoting a general state of wellbeing through
dietary principles, lifestyle, exercise and other techniques is an effective way
to manage our physiological systems. (British Naturopathic Association)

Principles of Naturopathy
1. All diseases, their cause and their treatment are one.
2. The basic cause of disease is not bacteria. Bacteria develops after the
accumulation of morbid matter when a favourable atmosphere for their
growth develops in body. Basic cause is morbid matter and not the
bacteria.
3. Acute diseases are our friends and not enemies. Chronic diseases are
the outcome of wrong treatment and suppression of the acute diseases.
4. Nature is the greatest healer. Body has the capacity to prevent itself
from diseases and regain health if unhealthy.
5. In Naturopathy patient is treated and not the disease.
6. Long waiting for diagnosis is not required for treatment.
7. Patients sufferings from chronic ailments are also treated successfully in
comparatively less time in naturopathy.
8. Nature cure/ treats physical, mental, social(moral) and spiritual - all four
aspects at the same time.
9.After emerging, suppressed diseases can be cured by naturopathy.
10. Naturopathy treats body as a whole instead of giving treatment to each
organ separately.
11. Naturopathy do not use medicine. "Food is Medicine".
12. Rama Nama or reciting the name of God and prayer is the best and
natural treatment(acc. to Gandhi).
Panchabhutopasana: Relation of Ayurveda and Naturopathy
• “Sarvam Dravyam Panchabhoutikatvam’’(Rig veda)
• At the Cellular level – A single cell of a living organism has these 5
elements as their component.
The Earth or Prithvi – Structure of cell (cell membrane)
Water or Jala - cytoplasm of the cell
Fire or Agni - Various Metabolism
Ether or Akash - Space to accommodate the various cell organelles.
Air or Vayu– Respiration and Movement of Nutrients, ions and
metabolic waste products
• The material world is composed of five basic elements- ether, air, fire,
water and earth.
• Their presence in a prescribed balance is the basis of health and
imbalance forms the disease.
• The consumption of five elements from the nature following the law of
samanya and vishesha- imbalances can be restored.
