Y7_Unit_1_Motion_Lesson_1_Position__Distance_and_Displacement

This document outlines the first lesson of a Year 7 Integrated Sciences unit on Motion and Energy, focusing on Position, Distance, and Displacement. It defines key concepts such as reference points, vector and scalar quantities, and provides formulas for calculating displacement. The lesson emphasizes the importance of relative motion and includes links to additional resources for practice and further learning.

Year 7 Integrated Sciences

Unit 1 Motion and Energy

Lesson 1 Position, Distance and
Displacement
Unit 1 Motion

Chapter 1 Motion (pg. 2-21)

◼Lesson 1 Position, Distance and
Displacement
◼Lesson 2 Speed, Velocity and Average speed
◼Lesson 3 Acceleration
◼Lesson 4 Motion Graphs
◼Lesson 5 The Scientific Inquiry (Parts of a
Laboratory Report)
Lesson 1: Position, Distance
and Displacement
Learning Objectives:
◼Define reference point, position,
distance and displacement.
◼Differentiate vector from scalar
quantities
◼Identify the SI unit of distance and
other units used
◼Calculate the displacement using the
formula x =xf – xi

Lesson 1: Position, Distance
and Displacement

◼Motion – an object’s change in

position relative to a reference point
Reference point

Reference point
◼A place or object
used for comparison
to determine if
something is in
motion
◼Ex. Stationary
object such as tree or
building
Reference Point

◼The Earth’s surface is used as a

common reference point

◼A moving object can be used as a

reference point as well
Relative motion

Relative motion
◼The motion of an object as compared
to another
◼Ex. You are moving relative to the sun
(comparing your motion with the sun
as your reference point)
All Motion is relative
◼In our environment, the reference for
motion is the earth’s surface, and
speeds are measured relative to the
earth
◼The earth moves at 107,000 km/h
relative to the sun
Relative Motion
Position
◼Movement involves a change in
position.

Position
◼A place where someone or
something is located

Units
Displacement

Distance
Vector vs. Scalar

◼Scalar quantity – is quantity that

has the size or magnitude but no
direction
Ex. Distance (50 km)

◼Vector quantity – is a quantity that

has both size (magnitude) and
direction
Ex. Displacement (50 km due north)
Distance vs. Displacement
Distance
◼Is a measurement of the length
between two points (the actual path
taken)
Distance vs. Displacement
Displacement (x)
◼is the object’s change in position
from it’s initial position to the final
position
◼x = final position – initial position
◼x = xf - xi
The SI unit of
distance and
displacement
is meter.
Distance = A -> B -> C = 7 m
Displacement = A ->C = 5
