I. One-to-One Function

DENNIS O. VALDEZ
Subject Teacher
 A function y = f (x) with domain D is one-to-one on D
if and only if for every x1 and x2 in D, f (x1) = f (x2) implies that x1 = x2.

 A function is a mapping from its domain to its range

so that each element, x, of the domain is mapped to one, and only one,
element, f (x), of the range.
 A type of relation wherein every element in the domain is paired with
exactly one element in the range
 A function is one-to-one if each element f (x) of the
range is mapped from one, and only one, element, x,
of the domain.
 A single x-value relates to only one unique y-value

Types of Relation with a Function

one-to-one many-to-one one-to-many

There is a single value of There are two or more values There is a single value of input

Example of relation-function (one-to-one function):
1. Pairing an SSS member to his or her SSS number
2. Pairing an airport to its airport code (3 letter codes like MNL-
Ninoy Aquino International Airport)
3. Students ID-LRN
4. A tricycle and its plate number
5. Chemical symbol to its chemical element
6. Husband and Wife
7. Facebook name to password.

Functions can be written as ordered pairs, tables,
graphs

R -2 -1 0 1 2

6
Horizontal Line Test
A function y = f (x) is one-to-one if and only if
no horizontal line intersects the graph of y = f (x)
in more than one point.
y
Example: The function
y = x2 – 4x + 7 is not one-to-one on the real (0, 7) (4, 7)
numbers because the line y = 7 intersects y=7
the graph at both (0, 7) and (4, 7). 2

Example: Apply the horizontal line test to the graphs below to determine
if the functions are one-to-one.
a) y = x3 b) y = x3 + 3x2 – x – 1

FINDING INVERSES OF LINEAR FUNCTIONS

An inverse relation maps the output values back to their

original input values. This means that the domain of the
inverse relation is the range of the original relation and
that the range of the inverse relation is the domain of the
original relation.

FINDING INVERSES OF LINEAR FUNCTIONS

To find the inverse of a relation that is given by an

equation in x and y, switch/interchange the roles of x and y and
solve for y (if possible).
Finding an Inverse Relation

Find an equation for the inverse of the relation y = 2 x – 4.

SOLUTION

y=2x–4 Write original relation.

x =2y – 4 Interchange/Switch xx and y . y

x + 4 = 2y Add 4 4to each side.
1 x+2=y Divide each side by 2. 2

The inverse relation is y = 2 x + 2.

If both the original relation and the inverse relation happen to be

functions, the two functions are called inverse functions.
FINDING INVERSES OF NONLINEAR FUNCTIONS
Finding an Inverse Power Function

Find the inverse of the function f (x) = x 2. x0

SOLUTION

f (x) = x 2 Write original function.

y = x2 Replace original f (x) with y.

x = y2 Switch x and y.

± x=y Take square roots of each side.

abscissa, x-coordinate

Range

ordinate, y-coordinate
Domain & Range of f(x) =√(x-1)?

IV. Solving Real-life Problems

Involving Inverse Functions
Ex. Trisha and her mother are planning for a
debut party. Trisha suggested that she wants to
celebrate her birthday at Jardin De Emilia Hall.
The reception hall costs a flat rate of ₱2000.00
and an additional rental fee of ₱100.00 per guest.
If their budget for hall expenses is limited at
₱15,000.00.
1. Give the cost as a function of the number of
guests and give the inverse of cost as a function
of the number of guests?
