THEATER

WHAT IS THEATER?

Theatre or theater is a collaborative


form of performing art that uses live
performers, usually actors or actresses,
to present the experience of a real or
imagined event before a live audience in
a specific place, often a stage.

Audience - The essence of theater is the interaction

Director - The director makes certain that the
performers understand the text and deliver the script
excitingly and appropriately.

A theater artist, also known as a


theatrical artist, is an individual who is
involved in the creation and
performance of theater productions.
They are skilled professionals who
contribute their talents and expertise to
bring stories to life on stage.

DAISY AVELLANA
(January 26, 1917 - May 12, 2013).

Was a Filipino stage actress


and theater director. Avellana
was honored as a National
Artist of the Philippines for
Theater and Film in 1999.
Avellana was born Lourdes Genoveva
Dolores Pardo Hotiveros on January 26,
1917, in Capiz, Capiz, (now Roxas City).
She was the eldest child of Jose
Hontiveros and Vicenta Ruiz Pardo.
Avellana was one of the first graduates of
the UST Graduate School with Master of
Arts (MA) in English.

She starred in plays like Othello (1953),


Macbeth in Black (1959), Casa de

ROLANDO S. TINIO
(MARCH 5, 1937- JULY 7, 1997)

Rolando Tinio is a Philippine


National Artist for Theater
and Literature. He was born
in Gagalangin, Tondo, Manila
on March 5, 1937
Rolando Santos Tinio was director,
actor, educator, critic, translator, poet
and a dramatist.
This national artist was also known for
translating western classics into
Tagalog, including works of
Shakespeare (The Merchant of Venice),
Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman),
Samuel Beckett (Waiting for Godot)
The highlight of Tinio's colorful career was
when he became the artistic director of the
CCP's resident theater company, Tanghalang
Pilipino.
His famous artwork is "Sitsit sa Kuliglig"
(Whistling at Cicadas) or (Shussing Cicadas)
(1972) "Dunung-Dunungan" (Pedantry)
(1975) "Kristal na Uniberso" (Crystal

GUERRERO
(JANUARY 22, 1910 - APRIL 28, 1995)

Was a Filipino playwright, director, teacher


and theater artist. He wrote over 100 plays,
41 of which have been published. His
unpublished plays have either been broadcast
on the radio or staged in various parts of the
Philippines
He was considered as a talented writer,
director, educator, and an artist who wrote a
number of outstanding plays, 41 of which were
circulated. Guerrero was born in Ermita, Manila.
He wrote his first play at the age of 14 in
Spanish, entitled No Todo Es Risa. This play
was produced at the Ateneo de Manila
Guerrero received three national awards: the Rizal

recognized in 2018 as a National Artist
of the Philippines for Theater.

cultural forms, the literary
form of the pasyon, the
theatre form of the
sinakulo, and the art of
puppetry.
 Among her works were 10 books, 16
plays, 30 plays for children and more
than 130 short stories for children
