AIMS
OBJECTIVES
INTRODUCTION
• It is very important for community health nurses
to learn about various national programmes
planned and implemented by the Government to
participate effectively and intelligently in the
public health work in the community.
• Since India became independent, several
measures have been undertaken by the National
Government to improve the health of the people.

vital part of the country’s healthcare system.
• There are many programmes, and each one
serves a different purpose.
DEFINITION
• Health Programme means a program under the

supervision of a designated health director created to

assure the health and well-being of each child and

each adult as required.

• The National Health Programme is a government

initiative in India that aims to provide free or

affordable healthcare to all citizens of the country.


AIMS OF NHP
To face the challenges of communicable,
non-communicable and other serious
diseases the central government conducts
several national health programmes.

To bringing down mortality and


morbidity rates.

To improve the quality of life and


health of citizens.

To control / eradication of the


communicable diseases, improvement of
environmental sanitation, raising the
standard of nutrition, control of
population and improving rural health .

Helpful to improve the health of the

PROGRAMME IMPLEMENTATION

• The NVBDCP is implemented by states and


union territories, with technical and financial
assistance from the central government.
• The program operates under the National Health
Mission and is administered by the National
Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control
(NCVBDC)

1) MALARIA

• The programme launched in 1953 during first


five year plan.
• In 1958 the control programme was converted
into an eradication programme because of
the success achieved in the control of malaria.

STRATEGIC ACTION PLAN FOR MALARIA CONTROL
IN INDIA (2012-2017)

• VISION : Reduction, and elimination of malaria in the long

term.When new tools in combination with strengthening of health

systems will make national elimination possible.

• Malaria control is incorporated under the umbrella of NRHM.

• OBJECTIVE : To achieve Annual Parasite Index < 1per 1000

population by the end of 2017


GOALS:

1) Screening all fever cases suspected to malaria (60% through quality


microscopy and 40% by rapid diagnostic test

2) Testing all P.falciparum cases with full course of effective ACT and primaquine
and all P.vivia cases with 3 days chloroquine and 14 days primaquine.

3) Equipping all health institutions especially in high risk areas

4) Strengthening all district and sub-district hospitals.

OUTCOME INDICATORS :

5) At least 80% suffering from malaria get correct,affordable,appropriate and


complete treatment within 24 hours of reporting

6) At least 80% of those at high risk of malaria get protected

7) At least 10% of population in high risk areas is surveyed annually

• THE MAJOR EXTERNALLY SUPPORTED PROJECTS :

(I) Global Fund Supports Intensified Malaria Control Project


(IMCP II) : Implemented since October 2010 for five years
involving 7 North East States.

(II) The World Bank Supported Project On Malaria Control And


Kala-azar Elimination: March 2009-December 2013.
Financial layout was Rs.1000 crores. Involved 93 malarial
districts of 8 States and 46 Kala-azar districts in 3 States.
Phase I and II. Phase I = 50 most malarial districts and 46
kala-azar, Phase II = rest of the malarial districts. 24
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION
• Malaria cases have been consistently declined
from 2.08 million to 0.97 million during 2001 to
2016. (Till November, 2016).
• AS PER ANNUAL REPORT 2021-22, MOHFW
– In 2020 total 186532 cases (1,19,0,88 PF cases) 93
deaths were reported.
– In 2021 (Provisional data), a total of 64520 cases of
malaria and 35 deaths have been reported till July
2021 as compared to 89776 case and 49 deaths
reported during the same period in 2020 amounting to
28.13% decline in malaria cases.
