Character Development
Character Development
Lesson Objectives
1. Explain the concept of character Development
2. Identify character traits from a story
Introduction
You are reading a story about a boy who is afraid of the dark. At the
beginning, he runs away from shadows and hides under his bed. But by
the end of the story, he becomes brave and sleeps peacefully with the
lights off. What happened? He changed! That is called character
development. It is when a person in a story grows, learns, or becomes
different because of what happens to them. Today, we are going to
learn how characters change in stories and why it makes them more
exciting.
Meaning of Character Development
Character development is the way a person in a story changes and
grows from the beginning to the end. In stories, characters start with
certain feelings, actions, and ideas, but as things happen to them, they
learn new lessons and become different. For example, a shy boy might
become brave, or a selfish girl might learn to share. Good stories show
how characters change because of their adventures!
Character Traits in Character Development
Character traits are the qualities that describe how a character thinks,
feels, and acts. These traits can change as the character grows in a
story.
1. Positive Traits (Good Qualities)
a. Brave – Faces fears and takes risks (e.g., a shy boy becomes a hero).
b. Kind – Helps others and cares about people.
c. Hardworking – Does not give up, even when things are tough.
d. Honest – Tells the truth and does what is right.
e. Friendly – Makes friends easily and is nice to others.
Negative Traits (Bad Qualities )
Characters start with one trait and then change because of what
happens in the story. Here are some examples:
a. A rude boy → Learns to be kind and respectful.
b. A lazy girl → Becomes hardworking and determined.
c. A cowardly child → Grows brave after facing challenges.
d. A selfish prince → Learns to share and care for others.

The Brave Little Boy
Timi was a little boy who was afraid of the dark. Every night, he refused
to sleep without a bright light in his room. He imagined scary monsters
hiding under his bed and behind his curtains. His mother always told
him, “There is nothing to fear, Timi. You are stronger than you think.”
But Timi didn’t believe her.
One evening, there was a big thunderstorm. The wind blew so hard
that the electricity went off. Timi’s room was now completely dark! He
grabbed his blanket and wanted to run to his mother’s room, but then
he stopped.
Story Continues
He remembered his mother’s words: “You are stronger than you think.”
He took a deep breath and decided to be brave. Instead of running, he
sat still and listened. He heard the sound of the rain tapping against the
window. He realized that the "monsters" he had imagined were just
shadows from his toys.
The next morning, Timi ran to his mother. “Mama, I slept in the dark! I
was brave!” he said proudly. His mother smiled and gave him a hug.
From that day on, Timi was no longer afraid.
He even helped his little sister when she was scared at night. “Don’t
worry,” he told her. “You are stronger than you think.”

Fun Fact
Did you know that even superheroes go through character
development?
For example, Spider-Man started as a shy boy named Peter Parker, but
after facing challenges, he became confident and responsible! Just like
in real life, characters in stories grow, change, and learn from their
experiences.
