Five Tenets that make up the Essence of Entrepreneurship

1. Innovation. It is the sine qua non of entrepreneurship—the ability to do something new, unique and

different and to satisfy a need in the marketplace. While an inventor comes up with ideas, an innovator
delivers market-oriented products and services. The role of the entrepreneur is then the pursuit of innovation
within the marketplace.

2. Seizing opportunities. Entrepreneurs recognize, seize and pursue opportunities to innovate in the
marketplace. They see change as normal and healthy. They see it as an opportunity, whether the change is
in the market, in technology, in delivery modes or in the culture.

3. Gain personal satisfaction through innovation. An individual must believe in the value and benefits of
entrepreneurial life, such as independence and being “captain of one’s own ship.”
4. Doing risk analysis. No matter how careful the entrepreneur might be—there will always
be some level of risk. And this can never by negated—only analyzed, reduced and managed.
An entrepreneur must have the discipline to conduct sufficient due diligence before
committing resources to an undertaking.

5. Developing entrepreneurial habits. While certain personality traits may be

helpful, entrepreneurship is now generally regarded as mainly a collection of
skill sets that can be acquired and mastered.

Stephen Spinelli and Jeffry Timmons’ Dominant themes that have emerged from successful entrepreneurs
(1) commitment and determination (2) leadership (3) opportunity obsession
(4) tolerance of risk (5) tolerance of ambiguity and uncertainty
(6)creativity, self-reliance and adaptability (7) motivation to excel
Essence of Leadership

Society’s concept of being a leader may be associated with individuals in positions of

power: a president of a company, a senior pastor of a mega church or even the president
of a country.

The ability to have influence is rooted in relationship.

Leadership is defined as a relationship of influence in which

followership is gained and goals are met. Understood this way even a person who
influences a single person is a leader. It is a truism that to some extent everyone is a leader.
Essence of Leadership

What do leaders do and how do they influence people and structures?

First, good leaders cultivate the culture of a community or organization.

Second, good leaders cast a vision for the community or organization.

Third, leaders implement a process by which followership is gained and goals are attained.

Fourth, good leaders implement fairness and justice.

Fifth, leaders exercise stewardship of the gifts and talents of others.

Essence of Entrepreneurial Leadership
Many advocate the concept of entrepreneurial leadership as a platform for making
a difference.
James Kouzes and Barry Posner note,

“Leaders are pioneers—people who are willing to take

risks, to innovate and to experiment in order to find
new and better ways of doing things.”

According to Ian MacMillan, entrepreneurial includes both

“transformational enactment” (envisioning possible outcomes in the face of
uncertainty) and
“cast enactment” (motivating large number of people).

Entrepreneurship is all about leading and motivating

people.
Timmons and Spinelli, explains that effective entrepreneurial leaders must be
• skillful at managing conflict
• building teamwork and consensus, and
• understanding when change is needed.
• entrepreneurial leadership skills:
• stakeholder management
• the ability to solve problems
• the ability to communicate effectively and clearly
• the ability to plan
• the ability to make decisions on the basis of incomplete data
• project management skills
• negotiating skills
• the ability to manage outside professionals and personnel administration.
The conventionally viewed as leadership skills:

The capacity to lead, inspire and persuade key people with their vision of the company and
its potential.

An entrepreneurial leader is one who pursues opportunities in the face of opposition or

limited resources and brings together the human and financial resources necessary to
pursue an objective.
John C. Maxwell, one of the world’s leadership experts.

Maxwell is a long- time pastor who has written a

number of widely read books on leadership and is
in demand as a key speaker on the topic. Maxwell
has constructed five levels of leadership in which he
artfully summarizes how the different levels can
dramatically expand a person’s influence.
The concept of entrepreneurial leadership is based on the potent combination of what

constitutes a great leader and what the entrepreneurial spirit brings to that leadership.

Entrepreneurs must view themselves more deliberately as leaders and realize that they

have great ability to influence others. Likewise, leaders benefit by expanding their

influence through their capacity to pursue innovation. This fusion of entrepreneurial

leadership can have a great impact within a company and beyond.
