Autonomous Region in Muslim
Mindanao
• The Autonomous Region in Muslim
(abbreviated as ARMM) was an autonomous
region of the Philippines, located in
the Mindanao island group of the Philippines, that
consisted of five predominantly Muslim provinces.
• It was the only region that had its own
government.
• On October 7, 2012, President Benigno Aquino
III said that the government aimed to have peace
in the autonomous region and that it would
become known as the Bangsamoro Autonomous
Region, a compound of bangsa (nation)
and Moro.
Autonomous Region in Muslim
Mindanao
• On July 26, 2018, Aquino's
successor, President Rodrigo
Duterte, signed the Bangsamoro
Organic Law (BOL), which paved
the way for the establishment of
a new autonomous political entity
in the area, the Bangsamoro
Autonomous Region in Muslim
Mindanao (BARMM).
Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in
Muslim Mindanao
• GEOGRAPHY
• The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) was
situated in mainland Mindanao in the southern Philippines and was created by
virtue of the Republic Act No. 6734 which signed into law by
President Corazon Aquino on August 1, 1989. The plebiscite was conducted
in the proposed area of ARMM on November 17, 1989, in the provinces
of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.
• Establishment of the ARMM
• The recently coined term Bangsamoro is derived from the Old Malay word
bangsa ("race" or "nation") and Moro (the collective term for the various
predominantly Muslim ethnic groups in the Philippines, from Spanish
moro, "Moor”).
• Ramadan is the 9th and holiest month in the Islamic calendar and lasts 29–30
days.
• Most local laws in this region are based on Sharia: alcoholic drinks, pork and
CULTURAL homosexuality are banned. As a Muslim-majority region, dress code in
Bangsamoro is more conservative than in most of the Philippines. Women may
HERITAGE need to wear a hijab, but this is not required for non-Muslims. Legs and arms may
need to be covered completely.
• Among the Tausugs and Samals, the phrase "mag-tausug na kaw" means "become
a Muslim", instead of the more literal translation, "become a Tausug", as the Tausug
ethnic is regarded as the "original Muslims" of the area.
BASILAN
• Basilan, officially the Province of Basilan is an
island province of the Philippines located primarily in
the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region. Basilan Island is the
largest and northernmost of the major islands of the Sulu
Archipelago. It is just off the southern coast of the
geographic Zamboanga Peninsula.
• The name “Basilan” came from the Tausug name “Basih Balan”
which refers to magnetic iron. Roughly, translated and
abbreviated, however, “Basih Balan” means “the iron (magnet)
trail” or “the iron way”.
• Population: 65% Islam, 33% Roman Catholics
• In 1973, Basilan officially became a province carved out in the
Province of Zamboanga del Sur.
• Basilan is subdivided into 11 municipalities and two cities.
There are 255 barangays.
BASILAN
• Basilan is home to three main
ethnolinguistic groups: the
indigenous Yakans, and the later-
arriving Tausugs and Chavacanos.
The Yakans and Tausugs are
predominantly Muslim, while the
Chavacano are mainly Christian. There
are also a number of smaller ethnic
groups. Although the official languages
are Filipino and English, the main
native language is Yakan and lingua
franca is Chavacano. Other languages
include Tausug, Cebuano, and Sama.

MAGUINDANAO: “Land of Promise”
“ Seat of Muslim Mindanao”
• The Maguindanao are one of many groups of lowland Filipinos. Apparently, they migrated to the
islands from Southwest Asia several thousand years ago. Today, they live primarily on the island of
Mindanao, which is located in the Southern Philippines.
• The name MAGUINDANAO, meaning people of the flood plain, was given to both the people and
the island on which they live.
• According to legend, the MAGUINDANAO were converted to Islam by Shariff Kabunsuan, a Muslim
prince, who claimed to be a direct descendant of the Prophet Mohammed. The legend states that
he won his converts by a combination of his wisdom, the appeal of his message, and certain
supernatural powers. This prince married a local woman who is said to have been born miraculously
from a stalk of bamboo!
MAGUINDANAO
People
• The Maguindanaon are divided into two principal groups, each
with its own dialect and traditional location: The Tau-sa Ilud
(people of the lower valley) and the Tau-sa Laya (people of the
upper valley). The Tau-sa Ilud are concentrated in the areas
around Cotabato City and extend to South Dinaig. Traditionally,
they constituted the Sultanate of Maguindanao based near
present day Cotabato City. Their dialect is characterized by
more rapid, “harder” consonant intonations, with preference for
using “d” rather than “r” and variations on the use of “l” and “r”.
They’re renowned as sedentary wet-rice agriculturalists.
• The Tau-sa Laya, on the other hand, are concentrated in the
areas of Datu Piang and extend south to areas which include
Buluan. As a group, they constituted the Rajahship of Buayan
based near present-day town of Datu Piang. Their dialect is
distinguished by a slower cadence, a drawl, with frequent
omission of the consonants between vowels and a preference
for using “l” rather than “r”, periodic variations of “r” for “d” and
some differentiated vocabulary. Their primary means of
livelihood is a semi-sedentary agriculture and grow corn and
upland rice.
