QUESTION 1

Read pages 96 to 98 of 2025 Study Guide (Tutorial 501) and Chapter 12 of any edition
(2013-2025) of the prescribed text Wyse and et al.

The question has three subsections a) to c).

Questions 1a and 1c are 4 marks each

Question 1b is 2 marks with a total of 10 marks.


QUESTION 1
Questions 1a to 1c require your own lived
experiences of phonemic awareness.
In Question 1a, you should provide two words to
explain why English sounds (Phonemes) do not
correspond with English alphabets (graphemes)
in spelling.
2 marks will be allocated for two appropriate
words and
2 marks for plausible explanation of the two
words.
QUESTION 1

Question 1b, requires you to explain how words can be pronounced correctly or
incorrectly based on your understanding of phonemic awareness and your lived
experiences. 2 marks for informed explanation.
Question 1c, requires your personal experiences with English spelling and
pronunciation and how your understanding of phonemic awareness has helped you
to spell two words correctly and correctly pronounce two words that you have
previously mispronounced.
(4 marks)
2 marks for two examples of spelling and
2 marks for two examples of mispronunciation.
QUESTION 2
Read Pages 15 to 16 of the Study Guide and any other relevant sources you find on critical
language awareness before you answer this question.

Question 2a requires you to explain and demonstrate in your own words what critical
language awareness is. 2 marks for answers that show clear understanding of critical
awareness of language.

Question 2b, this question requires your own personal insight on the possible meanings
and intents that the advert is meant to convey as a marketing strategy. 3 marks will be
awarded for insightful answers, and 2 or 1 mark will be awarded depending on the quality
of the answers provided.
QUESTION 3

Read Page 18 of the Study Guide on Genre.


Apply your knowledge of genre to your indigenous music.
The question is designed to give you the opportunity to use
your socio-cultural context to demonstrate your understanding
of the concept of genre in relation to your indigenous music.
1 mark will be awarded for each of the three genres identified.

The question is based on the concept of voice
in the verbal category of sentence formation.
It requires you to demonstrate your own
understanding of the difference between the
two sentences provided.
2 marks will be awarded for adequate and
clear explanation of the distinction between
the two sentences and 1 mark for
explanation that is less adequate.

of sentence. It should be a single word answer
