Wheel and Axle

The wheel and axle is a simple machine that consists of a round disc (wheel) and a long rod (axle), functioning through rotational motion to amplify force. It operates on the principles of torque and angular momentum, allowing for mechanical advantage by enabling small input forces to produce larger output forces. Common examples include bicycles, car tires, and Ferris wheels.

A wheel and axle is a simple

machine consisting of a
round disc and a long rod.
The disc is known as the
wheel, and the rod attached
to the wheel is the axle. It
executes a rotational
motion and is used for many
purposes.
axle, Pin or shaft on or with which wheels revolve; with fixed wheels, one of
the basic simple machines for amplifying force. Combined with the wheel in
its earliest form it was probably used for raising weights or water buckets
from wells. Its principle of operation can be illustrated in the attachment of
large and small gears to the same shaft; the tendency of a force applied at the
radius on the large gear to turn the shaft is sufficient to overcome a larger
force at the radius on the small gear. The mechanical advantage is equal to the
ratio of the two forces and also equal to the ratio of the radii of the two gears.
How does wheel and axle work together:
Wheel and axle operates through rotational motion by
utilizing the principle of torque and angular momentum
The torque, also known as moment of force, is the
product of the force and distance from the central axis.
The input force is applied either on the wheel or axle
and transmitted from one part to the other. The two
parts rotate at the same rate. Due to a difference in
their circumferences, the distance they rotate in the
same amount of time is different. The image below
shows a wheel and axle when the force is applied to the
wheel
Advantages of wheel and axle

we all know that machines make our work easy. We also use
many machines in various aspects of life. The mechanical
advantage is when small energy and huge work is done by
small energy. It is the force ratio that the machine generates
(output) to the force which is inserted in the machine by a
human being (input)

• 1. Machines where force is applied to the axle
• 2. Machines where force is applied to the wheel
