What is Referencing?
• Referencing is the act of acknowledging the sources of information used.
• Referencing is done, in order:
To show that relevant sources have been investigated
To enable the person reading our work, trace the original sources
To provide documentary support for an argument
• Adequate referencing ensures that one is not accused of plagiarism.
• Works that should be referenced include:
theories,
ideas,
illustrations and
Diagrams
• Works not to be referenced:
Individual conversation that can not be retrieved.
Common ideas and concepts.
Terms associated with Referencing
Citation
• Citation is an expression in a work, showing the source(s) of information.
A citation can include the author's name, date, numbers etc.
Reference list
• A reference list presents all the information sources mentioned in the work.
Referencing and Citation Style
• A referencing and citation style is : a set of rules on how to acknowledge the sources.
 how the information is ordered, punctuated and formatted
• Examples of Referencing Styles Include:
APA (American Psychological Association) Style
IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) style
MLA (Modern Language Association) style
Chicago Style

• Mendeley is a free software by Elsevier.
 It is a reference manager and academic social networking platform.
Most Operating systems
• Mendeley can work in many operating systems.
 Windows, macOS and Linux
• Mendeley enables one to:
 Automatically generate citations and bibliographies,
 Collaborate easily with other researchers online, Most Browsers
 Easily import papers from other research software,
 Find relevant papers based on what you're reading,
 Access your papers from anywhere online,
 Read papers on the go, with Mobile apps

• Mendeley requires the user to store all basic citation data on its servers.

Storage space is upgradeable at a cost.

• User account enables one to utilize Mendeley.
