PRESENT Progressive (CONTINUOUS) GAME
HOW TO PLAY
To play this game, students must look around the classroom / outside the
classroom and describe what is happening right now using present
progressive sentences.

For example, ‘He is breathing.’, ‘The wind is blowing.’, ‘The teacher is

standing.’, ‘They are sitting.’, etc.

One by one, students should make a sentence, and if they repeat

something already said, or they cannot make a sentence, they are out.
Let’s watch this video about Present Continuous Tense
https://youtu.be/UdEasleUc54?si=9ACQhIlUj3g2Wd8A

What do you notice

about the video?

Write down 2 thing

you notices.
Progressive verbs are “ongoing
actions” which happen over time.
To make a verb progressive, you need to add “-ing”
to the end of a verb.
Example: playing, running, watching
•John is baking a cake.

•They are painting the fence.

•We are moving to New Zealand in the summer.

•The train is arriving in 2 minutes.

SPELLING RULES – VERB + ing
Past or Present ?
You need to decide if the action is taking
place in the past or present in order to use
the correct helping verb.
If the action is in the present,
you use “is” “am” or “are” as the
helping verb.
If you’re the one doing the
action (saying “I”), use “am”.

I am waiting to be picked up.

If the action is in the present,
you use “is” “am” or “are” as the
helping verb.
If one person or thing is doing
the action, use “is”.

My brother is talking on the phone.

If the action is in the present,
you use “is” “am” or “are” as the
helping verb.
If more than one person or
thing is doing the action, use
“are”.

We are collecting money for

charity.
PAIR ACTIVITY
Ready to try your
own?
Let’s write our answers on
our white boards! You need
both the main verb and
helping verb.
Remember.... ☺
If a word ends in “e” then you need
to drop the “e” to add “–ing” on the
end.

Example: slide becomes sliding
