PROBLEM-

SOLVING
THROUGH
ANALYTICAL
LISTENING
Two high school students, Mia and
Liam, are discussing a group project.

Mia: Liam, I’m really stressed about our group

project. We’re supposed to present next week, but
we still haven’t finished our research.
Liam I hear you, Mia. You’re worried that we
haven’t completed the research for our
presentation.”
Mia: “Exactly. We agreed to have everything ready
by today, but only a few of us have done their
part.”
Liam:“So, you’re saying that only a few people in
the group have completed their research, and we’re
behind on our deadline?”
Mia: “Yes, and I’m concerned that we won’t
have enough time to put everything together
if we don’t get the rest of the work done
soon.”
Liam: “It seems like we need to figure out
why the others haven’t finished their parts.
We should also come up with a plan to catch
up. Maybe we can redistribute the tasks or set
new deadlines.”
Mia: “Last time we had a similar issue, we
made a list of who was responsible for what
and checked in more frequently. That helped
us stay on track.”
Liam: “Good point. Let’s make a list of the
remaining tasks, assign them clearly, and set
up a few short meetings to check our
progress. I’ll also remind everyone of their
deadlines.”
Mia: “That sounds like a solid plan. Thanks for
helping with this, Liam.”
Liam: “No problem. Let’s get started on it!”
Appreciative Listening
 listening for pleasure and enjoyment, as when we
listen to music, to a comedy routine, or to an
entertaining speech
 describes how well speakers choose and use words,
use humor, ask questions, tell stories, and argue
persuasively
Empathetic Listening
provides emotional support for the speaker, as when
a psychiatrist listens to a patient or when we lend
sympathetic ear to a friend
focuses on understanding and identifying a person’s
situation, feelings, or motives; there is an attempt to
understand what the other person is talking about
Comprehensive/ Active Listening
listening to understand the message of the speaker, as when
we attend a classroom lecture or listen to directions for
finding a friend’s house
focuses on accurately understanding the meaning of the
speaker’s words while simultaneously interpreting non-
verbal cues such as facial expressions, gestures, posture,
and vocal quality
