It is presentation of information in an attractive and interactive with the uses
combinations of texts, picture, sound, video, animation which are very easy to
understand by everyone(i.e. effective interactive communication different
from traditional mass media like newspaper, radio ). E.g. Advertisements,
movies, games etc.
Examples of individual content forms that can be combined in multimedia.
Applications of
Multimedia:
Multimedia in Business
 Multimedia can be used in many applications in a business.
E.g. e-mail, voice mail, record management, group
presentation, office etc.
 It has made the work place global because anyone can work
from anywhere using these applications.

Multimedia in Entertainment
 It is heavily used to develop special effects in movies,
games, animations (VFX, 3D animation) etc.
 People are more entertained while watching those movies,
series, anime and playing those computer games.
Multimedia in Marketing and Advertising
 Marketing and advertising can be greatly enhanced through multimedia.
 Presentation that have flying banners, video transitions, animations, and
sound effects can easily
 appeal to the consumer and promote the sale of the products.

Multimedia in Education
 It can be an effective tool for teaching and learning, as it can make
complex concepts more engaging and easier to understand.
 E.g.. Watching educational videos in YouTube, Searching in Goggle, using
Projectors in classroom.

Multimedia in Hospital
 multimedia helps on early diagnosis of health problems. Also helps
promotions of awareness campaigns.
 computers enables to observe the procedures and communicate freely
with the outside operating theatre whenever required.
Multimedia in Bank:
 Multimedia applications are used these days to notify bank
consumers about transactions and other crucial financial
information.
 E.g. texts, phone call, internet banking. Multimedia is thus helping
banks give service to many customers.
 Their customers and also in educating them about banks attractive
finance schemes.

Multimedia in Communication:
 With the spread and development of the English language around
the world, multimedia has become an important way of
communicating between different people and cultures.
 Multimedia makes easier for effective communication.
 E.g. Google translate, subtitles, language learning apps etc.
Image File Formats
 Image file formats means organizing & storing digital image
in standardized form.
 It can store data in uncompressed, compressed or vector format.
 The formats are JPG, TIFF, PNG, & GIF.
 They are used in cameras, printing, scanning & internet.

Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPG)


 JPG is the file extension for JPEG files.
 Digital camera & web pages use JPG file.
 JPG greatly compresses the data into smaller files but it costs quality.
 Users can select low quality & small file or high quality & large
file.
 It’s used when size is important than quality like in web pages, email,
&
memory cards etc.
Tagged Image File Format (TIFF):
 It saves 8 or 16 bits per color (red, green, blue) for 24-bit & 48-bit totals.
 Either TIFF or TIF file extension is used.
 Digital camera save image in TIFF format, using the LZW compression
algorithm for lossless storage.
 It’s accepted as a photograph file standard in the printing business.
 It can handle device specific color spaces, such as the CMYK.
 OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software packages generate TIFF image
for scanned text pages.

Graphics Interchange Format (GIF):


 It can save with maximum of 256 colors.
 It is used to make small & fast-loading graphics for the Web.
 It’s suitable for storing graphics with few colors such as simple diagrams,
cartoon style images, web buttons, banners & text heading etc.
 It uses LZW lossless compression.
 GIF achieved almost universal software support.
Portable Network Graphics (PNG)
 PNG file format is open-source alternative to GIF.
 PNG-8 is similar to GIF.
 PNG-24 allows ranges of color similar to a high color JPG but it can’t
replace
JPG.
 It’s suitable for storing images during editing process.
 Animated formats derived from PNG are MNG and APNG.
Web Based Multimedia:
 It is an online experience that includes media elements
like texts, graphics, sounds and video.
 It enhances user engagement and interaction by
providing visually appealing content.
 It is also known as rich media.
 It often contain elements that users interact with directly.
 It display information as requested by the web page
visitor.
 The growth in web based multimedia will continue at a
rapid rate as the technology continues to improve.

them to effectively communicate with customers , employees and
stakeholders . Business and individuals need to understand the
characteristics of the various types of multimedia elements and the
