GRAPH OF A LINEAR

EQUATION IN TWO
VARIABLES
OBJECTIVES:

The learner graphs a linear equation given (a) any two points;
(b) the X– and Y– intercepts; (c) the slope and a point on the
line; (d) a slope and an intercept. SSP_M8AL-If-2
➢ Determines the x - and y - intercepts of a linear equation
➢ Graphs a linear equation given the X- and Y- intercepts
➢ Appreciates the application of the lesson to real-life situation
ACTIVITY 1 – FAMOUS FOUR METHODS

DIRECTION: Arrange the jumbled letter to find the

famous four methods.
1. O T W O T I N P S
2. X D A N Y S T E C P E R N I T
3. P O S L E D A N A N I P O T
4. P O S L E D A N Y S T E C P E R N I T
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE 1
To graph the equation y = 2x + 1 using this method, you need to
solve the x-intercept by letting y = 0 and the y-intercept by
letting x = 0.
Now, plot the x - and y - intercepts, then
connect them.
The x-intercept is the
abscissa of the
coordinates of the point
in which the graph
intersects the x-axis.
However, the y-
intercept is the ordinate
of the coordinates of the
point in which the graph
intersects the y-axis.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE 2
Draw the graph of the equation 4x + 3y = 12.
With x-intercept 3, and y-intercept 4, the graph in
the line that connects the points (3,0) and (0,4) is
the coordinate plane shown below.
ACTIVITY 2 – THINK, PAIR & SHARE

DIRECTION: Select your partner, graph the given linear

equations and share your answer with your partner.
1. 2x + 2y = 10
2. 2. 21 = 3y + 7x

Time allotment: 5 to 10 minutes

ACTIVITY 3
DIRECTION: Group the class into four groups. Each group
will graph each linear equation whose x - intercept a and y -
intercept b are given below:
1.a = 2 and b = 1
2.a = 4 and b = -1
3.a = -2 and b = -7
4.4. a = ½ and b = -2
The linear equation can be graphed by using x - intercept a and y
-intercept b. The x - and y - intercepts of the line could represent
two points, which are (a, 0) and (0, b). Thus, the intercepts are
enough to graph the linear equation.

• The x-intercept of a line is the x-coordinate of the point where

the line intercepts at x-axis.
• The y-intercept of a line is the y-coordinate of the point where
the line intercepts at y-axis.
EVALUATION:
I - Graph each linear equation whose x - intercept a and y -
intercept b are given below.
1. a = -4 and b = 2
2. a = 3 and b = - 52
II – Graph the ff. linear equations using x – and y –
intercepts.
3. 2x + 3y = 6
4. x – y = -2
