Music
Lucrecia “King” Roces
Kasilag (born on August 31,
1918 in San Fernando, La
Union; d. August 16, 2008,
Manila) was declared as a
National Artist of the
Philippines in 1989. She won
the Presidential Award of
Merit as Woman Composer
(1956), Presidential Award of
Merit (1960), 12
Gold Medal for Leadership and
Outstanding Contribution to Music and
the Arts (1960), and many more. She
was a pianist, composer, conductor,
founder of the center for research and
theatrical performances called
Bayanihan Folks Arts Center, and the
former president of the Cultural Center of
the Philippines. Lucrecia Kasilag aspired
to become a concert pianist. However,
she was not able to create a career due
to a degenerate fifth finger.
