Enlighten

Stress is a natural
response of our body to
challenging or demanding
situations. It can be a
feeling of emotional or
physical tension triggered
by any event or thought
that makes you feel
frustrated, angry, or
nervous.
10
Enlighten

Stress can come from

various sources in our daily
lives, especially for
learners like you. These
sources are known as
stressors. Stressors can be
anything that causes stress
and can be different for
everyone.

11
Positive Stressors
(Eustress)
Eustress is a beneficial and
motivating type of stress. It is a
positive response to a stressor
that can help you perform better
and achieve goals. Eustress can
make you feel excited and
energized.

12
Examples of Positive Stressors:

● Achieving goals
● New experiences
● Challenging tasks

13
Negative Stressors
(Distress)

Distress is a harmful type of

stress that can negatively impact
one's health and well-being. It
occurs when stressors become
overwhelming or persistent,
leading to negative emotions
and physical symptoms.

14
Examples of Negative Stressors:

● Academic pressure
● Social issues
● Family problems
● Major changes

15
How the Body Reacts
to Stress?
When you experience
stress, your body responds in
several ways. These physical
responses are part of the "fight
or flight" response, which
prepares your body to deal with
a perceived threat.

16
Here are some common physical reactions to stress:

● Increased heartbeat
● Sweating
● Rapid breathing
● Tense muscles

17
Why Do These Physical Responses Occur?

These physical responses occur because your body is trying

to protect you from harm. When you perceive a threat, your
brain sends signals to your body to prepare for action. This
automatic response has evolved over time to help humans
survive dangerous situations. However, in modern life, these
physical responses can be triggered by non-threatening
stressors, like exams or peer pressure, which can be
overwhelming if they happen too often or too long.

stressors.

2. Create a short role-play that shows the stressor, the
physical/emotional responses, and a coping strategy to manage it.
3. Groups will present their role plays to the class.

Part 3: Stress Coping Strategy Brainstorm

4. After each presentation, the class will brainstorm additional coping
strategies that could be used in the scenario.
5. Write these coping strategies on the board for everyone to see.

stressors you identified in
your group?
2. What physical and emotional
responses to stress did you
discuss?
3. What coping strategies were
effective in your role plays,

22
Coping With Stress
Coping strategies are the
methods we use to manage
stress and reduce its negative
impact on our minds and bodies.
Some coping strategies are
beneficial and can help us
thrive, while others can be
harmful and make our stress
worse.
23
Unhealthy Coping Strategies

● Using alcohol or drugs

● Comfort eating
● Avoidance
● Blame

24
Consequences of Unhealthy Strategies:

● Physical health issues: Unhealthy eating or substance abuse

can lead to physical health problems like obesity, heart
disease, or addiction.
● Mental health problems: Avoiding stress or blaming others
can lead to feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, or depression.
● Relationship strain: Blaming others or using drugs and
alcohol can damage relationships with family and friends,
leading to isolation and loneliness.

25
Healthy Coping Strategies:

● Visualization and positive self-talk

● Managing time and energy effectively
● Keeping a gratitude journal
● Talking to a responsible adult
● Practicing grounding exercises and mindfulness activities
● Praying in difficult times
