The document outlines the development of the heart, detailing the formation of the heart tube and its partitioning into various structures such as the atria and ventricles. It discusses the fate of key components like the sinus venosus and foramen ovale, as well as the transition from embryonic to adult heart structures. References for further reading on embryology and anatomy are also provided.

25.2 - Describe the Development of the
Heart

Outline
•Formation & Development of Heart tube
•Veins associated with Heart Development
•Sinus Venosus : its fate
•Right and Left Atria: its Development
•Partitioning of The Primordial Heart
•Foramen Ovale & Bulbus Cordis: its Fate
•Summary: Diagrammatic representation
Formation & Development of Heart
Tube
•The heart primordium is first
evident at 18 days
•The developing heart tubes lie in
the ventral aspect of the embryo
dorsal to pericardial sac
•Begins to beat at 22 to 23 days
•2 tubes fuse together to form
single endocardial heart tube , in
craniocaudal direction
•Heart tube grows faster than
pericardial sac, therefore it shows 5
alternate dilations separated by 4
constriction
1) Sinus Venousus.

2) Truncus Arteriosus.

•3) Bulbus Cordis.

•4) Common Ventricle.

5) Common Atrium
•Endocardial tube , 2 ends.
1) Venous end ; Sinus
venousus. 2)
Loop Formation or S-Shaped heart tube

The loop projects forwards into the pericardial sac invested by

splanchnopleuric layer
Fate of Sinus Venosus

•Right horn = posterior

smooth wall of the right
atrium which is a/c sinus
venorum
•Left horn = the coronary
sinus
•Left common cardinal vein =
the oblique vein of the left
atrium
•Right common cardinal vein
= lower part of superior
Right & Left Atrium
•Right horn of sinus venous = posterior
smooth part ( sinus venorum)
•Primitive right atrium = Anterior rough
part ( Atria proper)
•These 2 parts are demarcated by
Crista terminalis internally and sulcus
terminalis externally
•Common primitive right atrium =
rough trabeculated part
•Absorbed pulmonary veins = smooth
part
Partitioning of The Primordial Heart

•Partitioning of the following

takes place :

• 1) Atrioventricular canal.
2)
Common atrium and
ventricle. 3)
Bulbus cordis
•Begins by middle of 4ᵗʰ
Fate of Foramen Ovale & Bulbus
•After birth when the lung Cordis
circulation begins the
pressure in the left atrium
increases and exceeds that
of the right atrium
•2 septae oppose each other
at a site known as fossa
ovalis
•Floor of fossa ovalis ->
Septum primum
•Margin of fossa ovalis a/c
limbus fossa ovalis ->
septum secondum
•Bulbus cordis in rt ventricle -
To Summarize…….
•Embryonic structure •Adult structure

•Ascending aorta
•Truncus Arteriosus
•Pulmonary trunk

•Smooth part of left and right

•Bulbus cordis
ventricle

•Trabeculated part of left and right

•Primitive ventricle
ventricle

•Trabeculated part of left and right

•Primitive atria
atrium

•Coronary sinus
