There are several types of employee separations that can occur when an employment relationship ends. Voluntary separations include resignations, retirements, and voluntary retirements. Involuntary separations are layoffs, discharges, dismissals, and retrenchment. When employees resign, it is their own choice to leave the organization, whereas dismissals are initiated by the employer due to misconduct or poor performance. Retirement occurs when an employee stops working after many years of service and reaches a certain age. The costs associated with separations include separation pay, unemployment insurance costs, and exit interviews.
