THE CHESS BOARD

The Pawn

The Pawn moves one or two squares forward on its first move, after that, it may only move one square forward. Pawns move forward on the file. Pawns may not move backwards.

Pawns capture only on the Diagonal.

When a pawn reaches the other side of the board, the 8th rank, it must be "promoted" to a Queen, or a Rook, or a Bishop, or a Knight. It may not be promoted to a King.

The Knight

The Knight Moves in a Straight Line from a dark square to a light square from a light square to a dark square

The Knight is the only piece that moves between (or over) other pieces. The Knight "jumps" over other pieces.

The Bishop
The Light Square Bishop moves on the Light Square Diagonals.

The Dark Square Bishop moves on the Dark Square Diagonals.

The Rook/ Castle

The rooks moves in the horizontal and vertical axis and they attack pieces in that order as well

THE KING : MAKE SURE HE IS ALWAYS PROTECTED

He can move only one square in any direction.

He can move one square on the Rank.

He can move one square on the Diagonal

He can move one square on the File.

THE QUEEN
The Queen is the most powerful piece on the board. She can move up and down on Files, back and forth on the Ranks, criss-cross the board on the Diagonals.

The King is in Check by the Pawn.

The king is in check by the queen

The King is in Check by the Rook.

The King is in Check by the Bishop.

The King is in Check by the Knight.

Move
The King is in Check!

Block

Capture
The King is in Check!

The King must move out of Check.

The Rook can Block the Check.

The Knight can Capture to get out of Check.

Checkmate!

It is Checkmate when the King is in Check and: 1.The King can't capture the piece that has placed it into Check, because the piece that is placing the King in Check is protected by another piece. 2.The King can't move to another square to get out of Check, because those squares are controlled by other pieces. 3.You can't block the Check by moving a piece between the King and the piece that is checking the King.
A King cannot place itself into Check. A King cannot place another King into Check. If a King is in Check, it must move out of Check.

This is Checkmate.

The King is in Check by the Queen. The King cannot move to get out of Check. The King cannot capture the Queen, because the Queen is defended by the Bishop. Checkmate!

The King is in Check by the Knight. The King cannot move to get out of Check. Checkmate!

The King is in Check by the Rook. The King cannot move to get out of Check. Checkmate!

Stalemate

It is Black's Move. Stalemate is when the King is not in Check and cannot move without placing himself into Check, has no other pieces on the Board to move, STALEMATE!

How to Castle

The King moves two squares to the side it wants to castle.

The Rook moves over and next to the King.
