Condenser

A typical 200 MW power plant uses a surface condenser that requires around 28,000 tons per hour of cooling water. Slight deterioration in the condenser's performance can lead to significant financial losses, as the condenser is responsible for condensing around 50% of the plant's heat. The condenser is designed to maintain a pressure of around 70 mm Hg absolute and uses nearly 18,500 copper-nickel tubes that are each over 9.9 meters long to condense the steam from the turbine. Non-condensable gases in the exhaust steam can impact the condenser's performance, as can factors like cooling water temperature and flow rate or dirty condenser tubes.

PERFORMANCE OF CONDENSER

Condenser
About 50 % heat is lost in condenser For a 200 MW unit 28000 t / hr of CW water is required Slight deterioration in the performance of condenser leads to huge financial loss Normally design value of condenser pressure is 70 mm Hg abs (0.1 Kg abs)

THERMAL PROCESSES OCCURRING IN CONDENSERS

The condenser never receives pure steam from the turbine. A mixture of steam and non-condensable gases (Airsteam mixture) enters the condenser. The ratio of the quantity of gas that enters the condenser to the quantity of steam is called the relative air content.

The value of e, depends on type, capacity, load and design dimensions of the condenser plant.
