- #2: Hello, my name is Anna, I am a Sr TPM on Alexa SH Cams & Computer Vision team and random fact - today is my Birthday! That is why I chose to spend it with you and to talk to you about something that’s near and dear to my heart - smart home technology.
- #3: By “smart home”, I’m referring to a house featuring “intelligent” technology that simplifies and automates everyday activities such as turning on lights or changing the settings on your thermostat.
- #4: Some of you may ask - how does Alexa fit in the picture? I have an answer for you - the goal of the Smart Home organization within Alexa is to enable voice control for smart devices. Now, the customers don't need to use their mobile app to control their devices. Instead, they can simply say, "Alexa, turn on the light", or "Alexa, show me my camera".
- #5: In 2018, among other devices, Alexa org launched the new versions of Echo devices: Dot, Show. The 2 devices that got a lot of press reviews and you might have heard of - Echo Wall Clock and AmazonBasics Microwave.
- #6: One important thing we did last year is go beyond voice control and making your smart home truly smart. For example, you can now say “Alexa, good night”, Alexa will have a hunch – you left your lights on, your back door is unlocked. Your smart home becomes smarter.
- #7: Despite the early adopter growth of smart home technologies, there are many barriers preventing mass-market adoption of smart home including: challenging installation setup, high device prices, and security & privacy concerns. Let us deep dive in each of them.
- #8: Consumer data indicates that if a smart home technology cannot be set up within 20 minutes than it will be returned back to the retailer. The core reason for customer dissatisfaction is the misalignment between their expectations and tech readiness for the price device manufacturers set.
- #10: One of the reasons for that is lack of the usability standards. While those exist in other areas, such as medical products or commercial fire alarm, the smart home industry is still defining what is user friendly in a large integrated system and how should the different technologies operate together.
- #11: As smart home customer base is growing, the industry accumulates more data to make informed decisions on how to reduce friction during setup and provide more accessible designs for the users.
- #12: Many customers would want the trivial matters of everyday life to be automated and improved - that is, if they could afford it, of course.
- #13: Let’s take an example: most smart home newbies start with lighting setup because it’s the easiest and least risky modification one could possibly make. Next, they are likely to add smart home cameras to take advantage of features such as live monitoring and motion alerts. If they want to “smarten up” the setup and add a voice assistant, the price tag can vary from $50 to $480 and that’s pretty much an investment for a new customer. How can we make smart home more affordable for a wider market?
- #14: As smart home devices become a commodity, the manufacturers are looking for ways to reduce product costs. One of the models actively used today is to produce cheaper devices out of the box and provide a premium set of features using subscription model so the customer gets to choose which features they need and pay accordingly.
- #15: Smart home can help save money. When smoke alarms, security equipment, lighting controls, and smart appliances are all connected, the customers get more visibility into the energy and water consumption so they can adjust as needed. For example, they can setup a thermostat to lower the temperature based on the home occupancy.
- #16: We have shared our digital footprint for convenience. With smart home technology, we are sharing our physical footprint. It is not a matter of if but when these systems will be compromised. Addressing security and privacy is a fundamental problem that we need to focus on.
- #17: It’s a joint effort between device manufacturers, app store certification centers, smart home leaders and users to reduce the risks of failure or data compromise. Security consideration needs to be included at an early stage of product design and implemented in every aspect of the system flow. The manufacturers play a big role by building protections into their products and evaluating them for any vulnerabilities.
- #18: Customers love smart home and anticipate even more devices en masse to disrupt their homes by minimizing their day-to-day work and enabling new capabilities such as home owner data sharing.
