THE SOLAR
SYSTEM
• Do you recognize this? Have you ever
seen it before? This is the Solar
System!
• The sun is on the left of the picture!
We see that every day right?
• The third planet from the sun is us!
The earth! We are the blue planet and
that’s how you can remember us!
• There are 9 planets as you can see
and we’ll introduce each one today!
INTRODUCING: THE SOLAR SYSTEM!
• Introducing: Mercury!
• The is the first planet in our solar
system and is the closest to the sun.
• It is the second smallest planet after
Pluto, the ninth planet.
• It completes its orbit around our home
on Earth every 88 days! Wow!
• It’s temperature is always changing
drastically from cold to hot! Which
means us humans could not live there!
• What do you think of Mercury?
THE FIRST PLANET: MERCURY
• Introducing: Venus!
• This is the second planet from the Sun
and our neighbor! Say howdy
neighbor!
• This planet orbits Earth about every
224 days! That’s a long time isn’t it?
• After the moon, it is the brightest
object in the sky.
• When you’re looking up at the stars,
keep an eye out for Venus! She’s
bright and beautiful!
THE SECOND PLANET: VENUS
• Introducing: Earth!
• This our home and the third planet
from the sun! How do you think it looks
from space?
• Earth is also known as “The World”.
• It is the only planet known to have life!
• Earth is home to 10 - 14 million
species of life, and 7.2 billion humans
or people! Wow!
• Did you know how many people
shared Earth with you as their home?
THE THIRD PLANET: EARTH
• Introducing: Mars!
• Mars is the 4th planet from the Sun and
our other neighbor! Let’s say howdy
again to our new neighbor!
• It is the third smallest planet, after
Mercury and Pluto.
• Mars has a nickname, “The Red
Planet” due to iron oxide on its surface
that makes the planet look red! Cool
huh?
THE FOURTH PLANET: MARS
• Introducing: Jupiter!
• Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun
and is the largest planet in our solar
system! Say hey big guy!
• Jupiter is two and a half times bigger
than all of the other planets combined!
THE FIFTH PLANET: JUPITER
• Introducing: Saturn
• Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun!
• Remember that Jupiter is the biggest
planet? Well Saturn is the second
biggest! Like Jupiter’s little brother!
• Saturn is nine times bigger than our
home, Earth! Isn’t that crazy?!
THE SIXTH PLANET: SATURN
• Introducing: Uranus
• Uranus is the seventh planet from the
Sun.
• You can tell by its color that it is the
coldest planet in the solar system! Brr!
• The planet is covered in ice and rocks!
THE SEVENTH PLANET: URANUS
• Introducing: Neptune
• Neptune is the eighth planet from the
Sun! Hold up five fingers on one hand,
and three on the other! That makes
eight! That’s the number planet that
Neptune is!
• Neptune is like Uranus in how they are
both cool and icy! We can pretend that
Neptune and Uranus are brother and
sister!
THE EIGHTH PLANET: NEPTUNE
• Introducing: Pluto
• Pluto is the smallest planet in our solar
system and because it is so small at
one point scientists made Pluto not a
planet anymore!
• Pluto is now considered a planet again
and the smallest one and also known
as a dwarf planet!
THE NINTH AND LAST PLANET: PLUTO
THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM DRAWN BY
KIDS JUST LIKE YOU! THEIR NAMES ARE EDEN AND
SAMANTHA. HOW WOULD YOU DRAW THE SOLAR SYSTEM?
