Positive Approach to
CareTM
Higher Education Network
Meeting
March 2016
Jayne Murphy and Gill Maidens
Teepa Snow
• Teepa Snow is an Occupational Therapist by
background and has 35 years experience in
dementia care.
• She presents, educates and publishes widely
in North America
• She recently developed links with the UK
through the dynamic dementia project (shared
syndicate), which led to a visit to the UK and
an offer of training opportunities to UK/Ireland
applicants.
Positive Approach to CareTM
• The Positive Approach to Care™ concept
was developed to support people living with
dementia by equipping both formal and
informal carers with specific skills aimed at
increasing understanding of what it is like to
live with dementia. Teepa’s approach is
focused on care delivery, rather than
theories.
Facts and Figures
• There are 4 types of certification with Teepa:
– Coach certification (for supervisors)
– Engagement Certification (for activity coordinators)
– Trainer Certification (for educators)
– Consultant Certification (for advisors)
• All require a level of prior knowledge and
experience, an ongoing commitment to
demonstrate development and an annual
licensing fee
Positive Approach to Care™
• Is 3 fold: it incorporates the GEMS™ concept, where people
living with dementia are viewed as precious gems (sapphire,
diamond, emerald, amber, ruby and pearl) and the focus is on
what skills remain, rather than what is lost.
• It explains the changes in the brain and why people living with
dementia may behave in a certain way
• It supports the care giver to appreciate what it is like to live with
dementia, to accept that the person with dementia is unable to
change but that the caregiver can be flexible in their approach
to make care giving easier by matching the approach with the
specific needs of the individual.
Positive Approach to Care™
• It encourages the practitioner/care giver to
consider their interaction approach to be
much more adaptable and person focused
– respecting boundaries and creating
connections
• A hand-under-hand technique is utilised to
connect and deliver supportive care (do
with rather than to)
