Voluntary Health Agencies
• An organisation that is administered by an autonomous board which holds
meetings
• collects funds for its support chiefly from private sources and expends money,
whether with or without paid workers
• in conducting a programme directed primarily to furthering the public health by
providing health services or health education
• or by advancing research or legislation for health, or by a combination of these
activities
Functions of voluntary health agencies

• Guarding the work of government agencies
• Advancing health legislation
ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION
History:
• It is a philanthropic organization chartered in 1913, endowed by Mr.
John D. Rockefeller to promote well-being of mankind
• Headquarters in New York City
• Its work in India began in 1920 with a scheme for the control of hook worm
disease
• The establishment of the All India Institute of Hygiene & Public Health at Calcutta
was mainly due to cooperation of the Rockefeller Foundation.
ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION
• Training of competent teachers and research workers.
• Training abroad of candidates from India through fellowships & travel grants.
• Sponsoring of visits of a large number of medical specialists from USA.
• Providing grants-in-aid to selected institutions, development of Medical college
libraries.
• Population studies.
• Assistance to research projects and Institutions e.g., National Institute of Virology
at Pune, setting up of field demonstration area to AIIMS
ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION
CARES
• CARE is one of the world’s largest independent, non-profit, non-sectarian
international and development organization.
• CARE provides emergency aid and long term development assistance.
• CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty.
• They place special focus on working among poor women who are heart of CARE’s
community.
History :
• Founded in North America in the wake of second world war in 1945
• Its operation in India began in 1950.
• Primary objective by end of 1980 provide food for children of 11-16 yrs
• To Achieve it, supported ICDS program.

(a) Focused its food support in ICDS program
(b) Development of programmes in the area of health and income supplementation projects

FORD FOUNDATION
History :
• It was chartered on Jan 15th 1936 by Edselford & two ford motor company
executives to receive and administer funds for scientific, educational & charitable
purposes, all for the public welfare.
FORD FOUNDATION
• Headquarters: New York
It recommended support for activities like :-
• Contributions to world peace & establishment of a world order of law & justice
• Strengthen, expand & improve educational facilities
INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS
• The Red Cross is a non political, non official international organization. It is a
devoted to the service of mankind in peace and war.
• It was established by Henry Dunant, a Swiss businessman
• The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) came into being as an
independent, neutral institution.
• In 1919, the League of the Red Cross Society was created with Headquarters in
Geneva to coordinate the work of national societies.
INDIAN RED CROSS
In 1920, the Red Cross Society of India was established with the following objectives:
• Improvement of Health
• Provision for disease control
• Mitigation of suffering
Not only during times of war, it provides amenities such as newspapers, musical
instruments, periodicals and other comforts to the military hospitals in peacetime
Activities:
• Relief work
• Milk and medical supplies
• Armed forces
• Maternal and Child welfare services
• Family Planning
• Blood Bank and First Aid

JUNIOR RED CROSS
• The JUNIOR RED CROSS is now one of the most active societies.
• It provides an opportunity to many boys and girls to be associated with activities
like village uplift, provision of first aid, anti epidemic work and building of an
international fraternity of youth
• Thus promoting international friendliness, cooperation and understanding
