whole new style of attack that most customers are not prepared to stop. As an MSP, you
are in a position to provide your customers with a multi-layered security service that

connected world. Here are 10 tips to help you protect your customers from IT security
threats, including ransomware.
COVER THE BASICS
Ransomware might be a new way to threaten your customers' systems and data, but
MSPs have been providing security services for years. This is another urgent reason why
customers need to start with the basics.
ACCELERATE THE PACE OF UPDATES
IT System and application vendors make major investments in systems, but -- believe it or
not -- don't keep them up to date.
MSPs need to implement a rigorous policy for system patches.
COMMUNICATE THE PROBLEM, ITS URGENCY AND THE SOLUTION
Focus on the threat but emphasize the ability to solve the problem.
Don't rely on fear tactics because customers don't respond positively.
Target business decision makers in addition to IT decision makers.
UNDERSTAND THE STRUCTURE OF ATTACKS
It's important to understand the fundamentals of ransomware: how it's distributed, how
attacks happen, how customers pay ransoms and what happens if they don't.
Understand what the attack "costs" and how many companies are affected.
ALIGN SECURITY POLICIES WITH CUSTOMER BUSINESS PROCESSES
Determine how different departments use tech to do their jobs, and identify the systems
that are likely to be vulnerable.
Design user-level processes that define safe methodologies, and distinguish behaviors to

Security is good, but data protection is absolutely essential.
Define the process for regular backups that fit within customer resources and timelines.
MONITOR SYSTEM STATUS IN REAL TIME
Identify the indicators of an attack in progress (i.e., traffic spikes or targeted ports), and
set up alerts for those triggers.
Do regular status checks of core systems to ensure configurations aren't changed.
CONTROL WINDOWS PERMISSIONS AND POLICIES
Remove user access to admin controls
Disable scripts, VSS blocking and set .exe handling policies
BE PERSISTENT WITH USER TRAINING
It's important to implement and maintain a core training program
