1. Say what music is
2. Talk about pre-historical music
3. Look at an instrument that was used
in the pre historical times
4. Look at the history of music
5. Look at ancient music and its period
6. Look at the medieval music period
and its period
Music can be defined as art form and
cultural activity whose medium is sound
organized in time. The common elements
of music are pitch, rhythm, dynamics,
and the sonic qualities of timbre and
texture.
 Music is found in every known
culture, past and present,
varying widely between
times and places. Since all
people of the world,
including the most isolated
tribal groups, have a form of
music, it may be concluded
that music is likely to have
been present in the ancestral
population prior to the
dispersal of humans around
the world. Consequently,
music may have been in
existence for at least 55,000
years and the first music may
have been invented in Africa
and then evolved to become
a fundamental constituent of
human life
 Prehistoric music, once
more commonly called
primitive music, is the
name given to all music
produced in preliterate
cultures (prehistory),
beginning somewhere in
very late geological
history. Prehistoric music
is followed by ancient
music in most of Europe
(1500 BC) and later music
in subsequent European-
influenced areas, but still
exists in isolated areas.
 In this picture it
talks about
Sesanid women in
china playing the
Chang instrument
in Iran in 37 AD
 It is probable that the first musical
instrument was the human voice
itself, which can make a vast array
of sounds, from singing, humming
and whistling through to clicking,
coughing and yawning. As for other
musical instruments, in 2008
archaeologists discovered a bone
flute in the Hohle Fels cave near
Ulm, Germany.[7][8][9] Considered
to be about 35,000 years old, the
five-holed flute has a V-shaped
mouthpiece and is made from a
vulture wing bone. The oldest
known wooden pipes were
discovered near Greystones,
Ireland, in 2004. A wood-lined pit
contained a group of six flutes
made from yew wood, between 30
and 50 cm long, tapered at one
end, but without any finger holes.
They may once have been strapped
together.
 The prehistoric age is considered
to have ended with the
development of writing, and
with it, by definition, prehistoric
music. "Ancient music" is the
name given to the music that
followed. The "oldest known
song" was written in cuneiform,
dating to 3400 years ago from
Ugarit. It was deciphered by
Anne Draffkorn Kilmer, and was
demonstrated to be composed in
harmonies of thirds, like ancient
gymel,[11] and also was written
using a Pythagorean tuning of
the diatonic scale. The oldest
surviving example of a complete
musical composition, including
musical notation, from anywhere
in the world, is the Seikilos
epitaph.
Music eras
Prehistoric
Ancient before 500 AD
Early c. 500–1760
Common practice c. 1600–1910
Modern Postmodern
c. 1890–present
 The medieval music
period started from
the period of 500-
1400AD. In the history
of Europe, the Middle
Ages lasted from the
5th to the 15th
century. It began with
the fall of the
Western Roman
Empire and merged
into the Renaissance
and the Age of
Discovery.
 Medieval music consists
of songs, instrumental
pieces, and liturgical
music from about 500
A.D. to 1400. Medieval
music was an era of
Western music,
including liturgical
music (also known as
sacred) used for the
church, and secular
music, non-religious
music.
 What instruments were
played in the medieval
times?
 Strings.
 Harp.
 Lute.
 Citole and Gittern.
 Psaltery and Dulcimer.
 Fiddle, Rebec, and
Crowd.
 Hurdy-Gurdy,
Symphonia, and
Organistrum.
 Soft Woodwinds.

Periods and eras of western classical music
 onsensus among music
historians–with notable
dissent–has been to
start the era around
1400, with the end of
the medieval era, and
to close it around 1600,
with the beginning of
the baroque period,
therefore commencing
the musical Renaissance
about a hundred years
after the beginning of
the Renaissance as
understood.
 Music was an essential
part of civic, religious,
and courtly life in the
Renaissance. ... The
most important music
of the early Renaissance
was composed for use
by the church—
polyphonic (made up of
several simultaneous
melodies) masses and
motets in Latin for
important churches and
court chapels.
