HISTORY OF UNIX
AND LINUX

❑WHAT IS UNIX ?
“ Unix is a computer
Operating System which
is capable of handling
activities from multiple
users at the same time. ”

CREATOR

Ken Thompson Dennis Ritchie
❑HISTORY OF UNIX
▪ UNIX development was started in 1969 at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey.
▪ The first version of Unix was written in the low-level PDP-7 assembler
language. Unix V6, released in 1975 became very popular. Unix V6 was free
and was distributed with its source code.
❑MAJOR MILESTONES
▪ AT&T was developing its System V Unix. (SysV)
▪ Berkeley took initiative on its own Unix BSD (Berkeley Software
Distribution) Unix.
▪ Sun Microsystems developed its own BSD-based Unix called SunOS and
later was renamed to Sun Solaris.
▪ Microsoft and the Santa Cruz operation (SCO) were involved in another
version of UNIX called XENIX.
▪ Hewlett-Packard developed HP-UX for its workstations.
❑ADVANTAGES OF UNIX
• Multitasking by making use of protected
memory
• It has a virtual memory that is very efficient
• Accesses control as well as security
• It is a powerfully united file system
• Lean kernel that will make use of the basics
• Portable operating system
❑WHAT IS LINUX
• Linux is an open source operating system (OS). An operating system is the
software that directly manages a system's hardware and resources, like CPU,
memory, and storage. The OS sits between applications and hardware and
makes the connections between all of your software and the physical resources
that do the work.
❑HISTORY OF LINUX
• Linux, computer operating system created in the early 1990s by Finnish
software engineer Linus Torvalds and the Free Software Foundation (FSF).
• On October 5, 1991, Linus announced the first “official” version of Linux,
version 0.02. At this point, Linus was able to run bash (the GNU Bourne
Again Shell) and gcc (the GNU C compiler), but not much else was working.
Again, this was intended as a hacker's system.
Basics you should know about UNIX and LINUX
❑MAJOR MILESTONES
• The first comprehensive distribution of Linux, Softlanding Linux System, shipped
to users at year 1992
• Slackware Linux, developed by Patrick Volkerding, launches as the first
commercial Linux distribution. It is currently the oldest Linux distribution still
under development.
• Linus Torvalds releases Linux 1.0, consisting of 176,250 lines of code.
• Linux Expo, created by Donnie Barnes at North Carolina State University. Barnes
went on to work for Red Hat, which later took over the expo.
• The first commercial Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, ships to consumers,
marking the emergence of Linux onto mainstream consumer computing devices.
❑ADVANTAGES OF LINUX
• Open Source
• Security
• Revive older computer systems
• Software Updates
• Customization
• Various Distributions
❑FACTS
• The first ever Linux kernel just occupied only 65 KB.
• As of 2018, there are 20, 323, 379 lines of code in the Linux kernel.
• All of the 500 fastest supercomputers run Linux.
• Linux runs on everything, smartphones, servers, submarines or space
rockets.
• Huawei, Intel, Google, Red Hat, Facebook, Canonical and Samsung are
among the top contributors to Linux kernel development in recent years.
• Linux is written over 95% of in C language, according to data by the
openhub.net website.
• Every time a kernel is released, it is given a codename. Recent
codenames were “Fearless Coyote” (v4.13) and “Merciless Moray” (v4.18).
• In Japan, the bullet trains use Linux to maintain and manage the advanced
Automatic Train Control system. The Linux platform is also used in the In-
Vehicle-Infotainment technology (IVI) in Toyota and the other automobiles.
• We can also run our Ubuntu Phone in windowed mode with little tweaks.
• Linux has a specific place in Hollywood. The Visual effects of Avatar and
Titanic were developed on Linux platform in 3D applications using the
FOSS software.
