Plants
CEIP Almirante Laulhé
Plants are living things, so they
need food.
Unlike animals, plants make their
own food. In order to do this, plants
need:
light air
water mineral salts
Plant nutrition involves several
processes:
1.
Plants take in
substances
from the soil
and from air.
3.
Nutrients are
transported
inside plants.
2.
Plants make
their own food
using sunlight.
4.
Plants take in
oxygen
through
respiration.
1.
Plants take in
substances
▪Water + mineral salt = raw sap
Plants absorb water and mineral salts from the soil
through their roots. The mixture of water and mineral
salts is called raw sap. It travels up the stem to the
leaves through tubes called xylem vessels. Plants
take in carbon dioxide through tiny openings, called
stomata, in the leaves.
• Raw sap: savia bruta • Carbon dioxide: dióxido de carbono(CO2)
• Xylem vessels: vasos leñosos • Stomata: estomas
2.
Plants make
their own food
Raw sap combines with
carbon dioxide and
transforms into elaborated
sap through
PHOTOSYNTHESIS. This
process needs sunlight,
which is trapped by a green
substance called chloropyll,
found mainly in the leaves
and stem.
During photosynthesis,
oxygen is released through
the stomata.
3.
Nutrients are
transported
Elaborated sap is
distributed from the
green parts of the plants
through tubes called
phloem vessels.
The non-green parts of
the plant are unable to
carry out photosynthesis.
• unable: incapaz
• to carry out: realizar

4.
Plant
respiration
Plants take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide through a process
called respiration.
Respiration takes place through the stomata.
Plants combine oxygen with nutrients to produce energy for growth.
Through , plants
take in carbon dioxide and
release oxygen during the day.
Through , plants
take in oxygen and release
carbon dioxide day and night.
Plants produce more
oxygen than they
take in.
Other living things use
this oxygen to breathe,
including humans.
