The digestive system extracts nutrients from food and expels undigested waste. It begins with saliva production in the mouth triggered by smell to help crush food with teeth. Food is then sent as a bolus down the esophagus to the stomach, where strong muscles and gastric juices break it down into a liquid that passes into the small intestine for further digestion and nutrient absorption. Undigested waste then moves to the large intestine and leaves the body through the anus.
