Urban agriculture is a growing movement that helps address poverty and waste management in cities. Growing food in cities reduces the distance food must travel ("food miles") and the waste generated by cities. Many cities around the world are engaging in urban agriculture through small plots and gardens that provide food and income while recycling the city's organic waste. Cuba transformed its agriculture system in response to economic crisis by promoting urban farming throughout Havana, now a global leader in urban agriculture. Other Latin American countries like Peru and Venezuela have also embraced urban farming.
