Slides from a short talk I did on why Open Device Lab are important to improve User Experience, including a few stats on the ever growing mobile web. Mobilliance at The Hive in Hong Kong.
Android is an open-source operating system used primarily for mobile devices like phones and tablets. It allows manufacturers to easily design devices with advanced features like GPS and WiFi. Some key Android versions include Cupcake, Donut, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean. Google acquired Android Inc. in 2005 and has since released many Nexus phones to demonstrate the latest Android software. All Android phones offer access to the Google Play store to download apps, with over 150,000 available. The Android software development kit helps developers create apps compatible with the operating system.
Android is an open-source, Linux-based operating system designed for touchscreen mobile devices. It was initially developed by Android Inc, which was later acquired by Google in 2005. The first Android phone was released in 2008. Android uses a customized version of the Java programming language and has a large community of developers writing applications. By 2012, there were over 700,000 apps available on Android through the Google Play store, and a survey found it was the most popular platform for developers.
Android is a software platform and operating system for mobile devices and tablets. It was developed by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White, and was bought by Google in 2005. There have been nine versions of Android released under confectionery-themed code names in alphabetical order. Android allows for messaging, web browsing, voice control, multitasking, and supports multiple languages and accessibility features. It also enables connectivity through Bluetooth and tethering, and supports media streaming, storage, and hardware requirements including a minimum of 200MHz processor and 32MB of RAM. Android is now the most popular operating system globally and continues gaining market share over other platforms like iOS.
The Microsoft Surface tablet has several unique features that set it apart from other tablets like the iPad. It uses the new Windows 8 operating system, which offers a clean and easy-to-use interface. Unlike most tablets, the Surface has a detachable, colorful keyboard and a kickstand, allowing it to function as both a laptop and tablet. The keyboard and kickstand make the Surface very versatile for tasks like working, watching videos, and surfing the web. Overall, the Surface provides a sleek, fast, and affordable all-in-one device that is easy for anyone to use.
CSS Grid Changes Everything About Web Layouts: WordCamp Europe 2017Morten Rand-Hendriksen
Slides from the WordCamp Europe presentation by the same name. From the conference website:
CSS Grid is now live in all major browsers, and with it everything we know about web layouts changes! Imagine drawing a grid in the browser and placing content in one or any number of cells without having to change the HTML or source order. And imagine changing that grid on the fly using media queries or JavaScript while keeping the HTML markup clean and accessible. That’s what CSS Grid does, and that’s why you should be using it today.
The CSS Grid Layout Module introduces a native CSS grid system, provided at the viewport level, that achieves what CSS frameworks and popular grid systems could only dream about: Responsive, flexible, pure CSS grid layouts, independent of document source order, that allow us to treat the browser as a true design and layout surface.
In this talk you’ll get an intro to CSS Grid and learn how it changes pretty much everything when it comes to layouts on the web. Through examples, code snippets, and practical demos you’ll learn how to use CSS Grid in a theme for modern responsive layouts, and you’ll also learn how to handle older browsers without Grid support in a clean and straight-forward way.
CSS Grid is here, and you can start using it today. This talk shows you how to do it right.

Web Performance in the Age of HTTP2 - Topconf Tallinn 2016 - Holger BartelHolger Bartel
Web performance optimisation has been gaining ground and is slowly getting more of its deserved recognition.
Nevertheless, much of our time on the web is still used up by waiting. To decrease our wait time and improve the web’s overall performance, this integral part of user experience needs further promotion.
Waiting and the perception of time itself, is reason enough to explore some of the psychological effects time has on our users, too.
Passing time also plays a big role in the evolution of technologies. Through the history of HTTP we have reached the latest version as HTTP/2, which will turn some of our existing web performance best practices on their head and into the new anti-patterns of today.
Web Performance in the Age of HTTP/2 - FEDay Conference, Guangzhou, China 19/...Holger Bartel
Web performance optimisation has been gaining ground and is slowly getting more of its deserved recognition. Now that we’ve learned to recognise this integral part of user experience and are approaching HTTP/2 as our new protocol of choice, some of our existing web performance best practices will turn into the new anti-patterns.

TrustArc Webinar: Consumer Expectations vs Corporate Realities on Data Broker...TrustArc
Most consumers believe they’re making informed decisions about their personal data—adjusting privacy settings, blocking trackers, and opting out where they can. However, our new research reveals that while awareness is high, taking meaningful action is still lacking. On the corporate side, many organizations report strong policies for managing third-party data and consumer consent yet fall short when it comes to consistency, accountability and transparency.
This session will explore the research findings from TrustArc’s Privacy Pulse Survey, examining consumer attitudes toward personal data collection and practical suggestions for corporate practices around purchasing third-party data.
Attendees will learn:
- Consumer awareness around data brokers and what consumers are doing to limit data collection
- How businesses assess third-party vendors and their consent management operations
- Where business preparedness needs improvement
- What these trends mean for the future of privacy governance and public trust
This discussion is essential for privacy, risk, and compliance professionals who want to ground their strategies in current data and prepare for what’s next in the privacy landscape.
