My current skills and abilities

Before I did the questionnaire, some of the skills and attributes that I
already have are; creative thinking, good time management and good at
working under pressure. After conducting the questionnaire, some of my
results that I was able to generate did change my attitude and perception a
little bit. The first questionnaire was allowed each participant to
understand some of the skills they possess along with areas were you
needed to improve. According to the questionnaire, some of my strengths
are problem solving and decision-making, research skills, communication
skills and time management. At first I was expecting to the questionnaire
to outline that problem solving & decision-making and time management
to be one of my strengths. However, the questionnaire summarised that
communication skills are one of my strengths. Personally, communications
skills are my weaknesses and an area that I really want to improve. After
carefully contemplating about this, I have noticed that listening skills have
a parallel link to communication skills. In several jobs within the television
and film industry, you will have been given orders by other employers
telling you to either send a message to a client or other people in the
hierarchy of the business. The job that I am most keen in applying for is the
role of a location manager. Some of the key skills and attributes needed for
this role is that individuals will need to have experience in resolving any
conflict and being a very good negotiator. This questionnaire has opened
up m mind a little bit in some of the skills that I believed were my
weaknesses, especially communication skills. Now I am in a position to take
the next questionnaire, which will explain each of the skills mentioned

above in a lot more detail.
My current experience As the years have gone by, there are skills and attributes that I have learnt
on the way to make the person I am today. During work experience in Year
10, I worked at Superdrug with my sister, who is currently assistant
manager of a branch of Superdrug. Throughout my time at Superdrug, I
encountered different roles, which allowed me to deal with a range of
customer issues. I am a very calm person with calming presence; this has
helped through difficult times. I believe these skills I have learnt will be of
beneficial to any television and film industries. Going back to the first
question, I personally believed that communication skills are one of my
weaknesses. Before starting my work experience, I was afraid in
responding to customers inquires as I was new in the experience of
locating products in different sections of the business. I would consider
myself to be someone who wants to do everything on their own rather
than asking for help. For example, if I was given the opportunity to work
with the administration team of this Superdrug branch and I was looking at
a profit & loss account or a balance sheet to identify where the incorrect
figures have been added, I am the type of person who looks for a solution
rather than getting any help. Although, I do believe that whilst working
here for work experience my confidence and self-esteem have increased in
being able to think of a solution on the spot.
The second work experience at a company called Proudfoot, a media and
film industry company in central London gave me an insight to what goes
on in this industry. I was given the chance to help carry out research on
several people involved in the documentary Proudfoot were making. This
improved my independent work, and made me more self-motivated. I was
able to establish a good relationship with my colleagues, which helped me
enjoy my time at Proudfoot. In the television and film industry, you are
expected to establish a friendly relationship in order for every worker to be
on the same page and the business to move in the right direction. I am also
aware that employer relationship will increase the productivity within a
workplace and the morale will give the workplace a better atmosphere,
which will get employees to out of their shells.
In addition to my work experience, my academic study has given me
valuable skills that will help me workplace environment such as
communication skills, organisational skills and independent work. During
my academic study, I have been able to develop my film making
experience. Before my ever-increasing interest has developed, I have had
past experience using a camera but there have also been a doubt in my
head in that I will never be a good filmmaker. I can now say that the
thoughts that have been going through my mind at the time were stupid.
Even though I believe that I not the best filmmaker, but I am learning new
things each time I get assigned a task, which involves me filming. Especially,
my creative thinking and my problem solving have helped me during my
academic study.
When it comes to working in a production team that was one of the tasks
that I most looked forward to. I may not be the best in being a leader for a
group of people, but contributing to the group will make any production
team very successful. With each member of the group being assigned tasks
to do, this has enabled me to develop organisational skills, independent
skills and time management skills. With each person focusing on their own
tasks, it is very important to be organised especially when it comes to

giving feedback to the group. In terms of independent skills, I had to work
alone without any help from others. Even if I was stuck on a particular task,
it is vital to figure out to yourself to what the problems are and how you
will overcome it. When each person is assigned to a group, it was essential
for me to right down all the important dates, which include the deadline,
so that I set myself to meet the deadline.
Over the years, I have tried to help others to be optimistic rather than
pessimistic. As I am someone who thinks very positive, mentally and
psychologically, it is very important to motivate other people so that they
can get rid the doubt in their head. Whilst working on a task I have come
across people who state ‘I can’t do this’ and ‘This is really difficult’. The way
in which I have dealt with this is by trying to explain their tasks in a way
they will comprehend. For example, if the task is to write up possible
legislations that could affect the production process for creating an
outdoor media campaign for the new channel ‘4later’, I would tell them to
think of the legislations that they have come across throughout the whole
course. I genuinely believe that this is one of my key strengths, and a
majority of job roles within the television and film industry you will be
required to motivate others and to make them optimistic rather than
pessimistic.
My career interests – what kind
of jobs/careers are you interested in and
why?
Realistically, there are two paths in which I can take; to either work in the
television or film industry. The television industry is an exciting opportunity
and one that really does appeal to me. There are many create job roles
that are available in the television industry, they include: camera operator,
sound operator, director, editor, producer, technical director accountant,
hair and make artists and many more exciting jobs. Whereas, the film
industry will be a great opportunity for anyone, as you will be working with
some of the most famous actors. Some of the careers within this industry
include; script writer, production manager, music supervisor and many
more exciting jobs. With both paths looking very exciting and intriguing, I
have made my decision into which industry I want to go into. My decision
is to work in the film industry. The reason behind this decision is that I
believe that my creativity will come out more here and the chance to work
with some famous people is a motivation in itself. Not only that, working in
the television industry will consist of working within the same location and
it will start t get boring. My final decision is that I want to go into a film
career.
Jobs identified – what jobs have
you chosen to explore and why?
There are a variety of jobs that do interest me, but the one that I have set
my heart on is the role of a Location Manager. This job role requires me t
have gained skills and develop attributes over the years. The reason why I
have a vested interest in this job role is that it requires people to be very
creative and sometimes thinking outside of a box. To become a very good
location manager, you will have to be very enthusiastic and someone who
is very reliable. Ben Carter, one of the most famous film location managers,
is an inspiration and some of the music videos, adverts and films he has
helped produced is outstanding. He has helped come up with locations for
adverts like; Relentless Energy Drink, Asda and Waitrose. Ben Carter has
also worked with Ed Sheeran and his producers to film the music video
‘Lego House’ and many other music stars. The chance to work with some of
the most famous people in an incentive itself. I am aware that there are
areas in which you can specialise in as allocation manager. The industries
that excite me the most are the music and film industries because they are
areas were my creativity and problem solving will work best.

The next job role that interests me is becoming a Film Production Assistant.
The reason why I have a vested interest in this job role is that I want to
develop my team working skills further and this job role requires you to be
organised, which I see the parallel links. Most importantly, your job is to
look after all the administrative and organisational tasks, as this will ensure
the whole production is run professionally. Many film production
companies look for people who are very enthusiastic and have previous
experience in this job role. Using the skills results, it outlined that time
management is one of my strengths, so there is a link between time
management and organisation skills. Time management is about planning
and having control over the time spent on activities, as I believe it will
improve productivity. Organisation is vitally important because as an
assistant, you will be required that all operations go to plan such as
organising travel arrangements for all of the cast, crew members of the
production team and all the production executives.
The last job that I am very keen on is the job post of a Marketing Film
Assistant. Titan Entertaining Group, a film company situated in Southwark,
London have the vacancy for this job free. The reason why I have a vested
interest in this job is because over the last few years I have always
wondered how film companies get their products out there in today’s
media society. The main personal specification need for this job role is to
have an everlasting passion for the film industry and to have strong
organisational skills. From the personal specification needed, I can already
say that I have a passion to work in the film industry and I do embrace
organisational skills, so this job will be suitable for me.

Jobs and many more useful job sites. Personally, they are good job

There are a variety of job websites that are available to me, with the
Guardian website being the most useful. I am aware that the Guardian is

chosen to explore and why?
As I have mentioned above, my decision is to find a career within the film
industry. There are many exciting vacancies within the film industry, but
with the skills and attributes I already caress, it is very important to find a
job that suits me. I have carried out a lot of research trying to find the
right career for myself. The potential jobs outlined above; Location
Manager, Production Assistant and Marketing Film Assistant are jobs that
not only do they sound very intriguing but the skills and attributes
learned over the years are suitable for each of these jobs. The first job is
the role of becoming a Location Manager. The reason why I decided to
because I can picture myself becoming a Location Manager, but I am
aware that I have go through certain jobs to build confidence and
experience. That is the job I am aspiring to. My job search consisted of
finding out what exact skills and level of experience people need in order
to be a successful Location Manager. This job role requires individuals to
have succeeded in a variety of job roles so that you understand job role
within the film industry consists of.
The second job selected is the job role of a Production Assistant. With my
main priorities is to become a Location Manager, it is very important to
develop my knowledge and expertise elsewhere. The reason why I am
interested in this job role is because I am keen to know the tasks and
responsibilities of this job role. Production management is by not of all
means a straightforward job, so by becoming an assistant it will give me
all the insight as to what to expect in this job role. Most importantly, each
individual has to be very enthusiastic and a vibrant character who will not

The last job role is a Marketing Film Assistant. With the basic knowledge
on how to market a product in a very competitive market, will help me.
Especially, when you are trying to get a new film out there in the public,

focusing most on is gaining a health and safety qualification that will

technicians and scaffolding, as I will be expected to know all of these

because then you can work out how to achieve them. Thinking about goals means that you will be
prepared to study the subjects you like, do the types of occupations you prefer, and keep your future
options open. If you meet a goal throughout the year, set another new one for yourself – maybe a
more challenging one.

The one and only goal I set myself was to improve my software skills using Mac computers. Before I
started the course, I had no experience whatsoever using softwares like Adobe (Illustrator, Flash
Player, Premier Pro and After Effects). I can now say that I have achieved this goal as I can use these
particular softwares to either a fair and good standard.

will provide up-to-date information to keep you informed.

Like I mentioned above, using my careers advisor will be the best way for
me to find information on jobs. As I have friends and family who are

My Review
 Throughout the year it is important for you to spend some time thinking
about the goals and plans you set for yourself, and what it was like
applying your skills and knowledge to successfully move into your
preferred career. Reflecting on what you wrote in your Career Action Plan
throughout the year, you might need to include some new things in your
next Career Action to help you to achieve your long-term goals.
Which goals have I achieved at this stage?
My education/training goals When I achieved them
Achieving higher grades for coursework (Business) than I first expected. The
first goal I set myself at the start of the year was to achieve the highest I can
possibly can, and from the feedback given from teachers I achieved either
100% or just outside achieving full marks in the first coursework.
Feedback was given to me in
January 2014.
My employment goals When I achieved them
To have a good job in the next 6-7 years time. The experiences that I will gain
from the becoming a Production Assistant and a Marketing Assistant will help
me become an established Location Manager in the future. Once this happens,
I will be attracting interests from larger organisations who are willing for me to
take the role
This will be achieved in the
next 6-7 years
Which goals need further work?
Goals People/resources to help me
The first goal mention about my education process needs further work,
especially for the course Media Studies. I need to give 100% in all
lessons and all the work given to me, in order to achieve the grades I
am aspiring to get.
I have three very good teachers who
are there to help me achieve these
grades. There are also very good
resources such as using the exam
boards website to get information on
how to achieve the highest grades.
