Where is the Data?
What is Linked Data?
• Structured data: Ontology
• URI: http://viaf.org/viaf/xxx
• Relationships: Triples
• The Semantic Web:
Promotes common data formats on the web.
• Linked Data
Web of Documents: URL
How does Linked Data work?
Why is it important for libraries?
• Librarians:
We put information in Information Technology.
• Add value to information:
• Create, update
• Store, preserve
• Index, catalog
• Retrieve, access
Catalog web pages
Findability, data reuse
Authority Control
Software InfrastructurePlatforms
ILS: Voyager, Aleph
ILL,
Etc.
Link resolver : 360 Link
library guides: LibGuides
Online databases
IR (Scholarly Publications): DSpace
DAM (Digital Preservation): Islandora
Websites: Library websites
Library Technology Challenges & Linked Data
Bring traffic? Add AU control? Catalog/find them easily?
Linked Data can:
• Web traffic: 80% of hits from Google 
Home page redesign
• Data reuse: by other web applications
• Authority control: subject headings
with URIs. Don’t have to pay vendors.
• BIBFRAME: edit records faster
How could we use it? – Web sites
Structured data in HTML using attributes: schema.org
• vocab:
• typeof:
• property:
• resource:
• prefix:
<div vocab="http://schema.org/" typeof="Book">
<div><em>Author</em>:
<span property="author" typeof="Person">
<span property="familyName">Gates</span>
<span property="givenName">Bill</span>. </span>
</div>
How could we use it? – Digital Curation
• Linked Data for Libraries (Cornell, Harvard & Stanford)
• IR (Institutional Repository)
• DAM (Digital Asset Management)
- Stanford (Fedora 4)
- UNLV's Linked Data Project

Linked Open Data and Digital Curation (Islandora)
Islandora – RDF & Compound Object
Linked Data in Islandora
“Islandora and Linked Open Data”, Erin Tripp, discoverygarden inc
Linked Data in Islandora – Resource Index
• Indexes RDF as part
of the Resource
Index.
• Provides unified
"graph" of the
objects and their
relationships
• It can be queried
using RDQL or ITQL

Editor's Notes

  • #3: The library is the place which provides the information to the users The first key element: is the user, who is the librarians’ patron Then, the resources and materials, which have the information needed by the patron The 3rd key element is the Technology, which is the tool to help library deliver access to their collections , and enable the library to offer new services to the users. The Systems Librarians Role is the administer of the systems, whose work is to manage, maintain and apply the technology in the library, in order to provide service to the end users. Each element includes different groups of sub-elements.
  • #8: The Semantic Web provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries In terms to be considered as Linked data, there are three key elements: Ontology: Dublin Core or schema.org
  • #9: Linked Data takes us from Hypertext Links (Document to Document) to Hyperdata Links (across things that documents are about). By adding the URI to the things/subjects, the users can link to what they need directly from their container which improve the relevancy of their searches. But we don't know what those documents are. linked data is actually designed to improve the web for machines/applications. For example if a human searches for Bill Gates and gets back html documents they can quickly glance at those documents and understand from language which ones are about Bill Gates and which ones are by Bill Gates. However, the computer can just serve up everything based on search term because there is no structured data to sort this out. With linked/structure data applications have the information needed to sort out which is by Bill Gates and which is about Bill Gates and then display results differently to users. In terms of mashing up data, for example: BBC Nature web site , it is the application that is able to mash-up data from different sources and serve that up to the user – it isn’t the web user who is using linked data to do that.
  • #10: without information, IT is just T. We not only put the information, we also add value in the information. The 4 main processes involved in are:
  • #11: New Systems have emerged: Scholarly communication — New scholarly communication and publishing Digital preservation —the general lack of strategic leadership for establishing architecture, policy, or standards for creating, accessing, and preserving digital content is likely to emerge. BIBFRAME – still in the experimental phase. It won’t replace all our formats – we still might be using different schema for library catalogue and IR. But the point is with linked data we might be able to program around this because all in one format, for example RDF XML.
  • #12: This is what I learned from an ALA workshop vocab: the vocabulary that defines the referenced types and their properties typeof: the type of the thing being described property: the property of the described thing resource: an identifier for a given thing on the page prefix: you can mix multiple vocabularies, if you have to Linked data is about making the web machine-friendly which in the end makes it more human-friendly.
  • #13: LD for Libraries: It is funded by a $1 million grant and the goal of the project is to create a Scholarly Resource Semantic Information Store (SRSIS) model that works both within individual institutions and through a coordinated, extensible network of Linked Open Data.
  • #16: PIDs as URI (HTTP) (contains pids and search parameters) RDF is available in the RELS-EXT datastreams. - RDF provides relationships between objects in the repository Parent/ child relationships, New compound relationships
  • #17: Here is an example to show the relationship functionality stored in Islandora and Fedora (i.e. parent/ child relationships and now the new compound relationship structure).
  • #18: " Fedora repository service automatically indexes the RELS-EXT datastreams for all objects as part of the RDF-based Resource Index. This provides a unified "graph" of all the objects in the repository and their relationships to each other. The Resource Index graph can be queried using SQL-like query languages for RDF" (Fedora Project, 2006).
