THE SHINING (1980)
DIRECTED BY STANLEY KUBRICK
SYNOPSIS
 A writer Jack Torrance takes a job as an off-
season caretaker at an isolated hotel.
 His young son posses psychic abilities and is able
to see things from the past and the future, such
as a ghost which inhabits the hotel.
 Soon after settling in, the family are trapped in
the hotel by a snowstorm, and Jack gradually
becomes influenced by a supernatural presence.
 He descends into madness and attempts to
murder his wife and son.
INFORMATION
 ‘The Shining’ written in1980 is a PSYCHOLOGICAL
horror film. Rated 18.
 Produced and directed by STANLEY KUBRICK
 Co-written with novelist Diane Johnson
 The film is based on the STEPHAN KING novel ‘The
Shining.’
 It was produced by HAWK FIMS, PEREGRINE &
PRODUCERS CIRCLE and was distributed by
WARNER BROS
 Budget of the film was $19 million. Box office it
made was $44,017,374
REVIEW
 I agree with the first
review because the
film doesn't have as
much blood that you
would expect from a
horror film, because
it’s subgenre is
psychological horror.
However because of
the intense music it
builds up suspense
which creates the
horror and fear for us
whist watching the
film.
 I agree with the two reviews (on the right) because the
setting of the film and the choice of location does make
the audience more aware of how isolated the characters
are and it brings to light that anything may happen that
may lead to the characters not being able to escape. Just
like most psychological horror its confusing to begin with
but once you start getting into the film it all becomes clear
and frightening which is helped by the settings used in the
film.
FILM POSTERS
 The official film poster for the film.
 The poster fulfill the conventions of a horror film because:
they are in bold colors and font. The title of the film is at
the center which catches the attention of the audience.
In the yellow poster there is a vivid face in the title. The
effect this has is that it makes the audience wonder who is
that person or is it even a humans face. It brings a lot of
questions to mind.
 Also the background colour of the poster is yellow so that
it can enhance the black of the fonts. Yellow also
connotes danger as its seen a lot on danger signs and
warnings which implies the genre of the film. On top of the
poster there’s a comment saying ‘a masterpiece of
modern horror’ This gives an indication of a positive review
for the film.
