Task 3
I believe the overall look of my images wasgood and I am
pleased with them. To construct my images I hand drew them, before
scanningthem into the computer, rasterizingand changing the
threshold of the image to allow only the solid lines to be seen. By
drawingthe images I ended up with a hand drawn effect to the
images, which I liked. This effect reminded meof old hand drawn
graphic novelsand even old Chinese stories that would have been
written on tapestries. Because of this I think the technique added to
the traditional feel to the images. This effect Finally I used the fill tool
to colour the differentblocks of white in, I think that this method
gave a crisp and professionalfinishto the images while still slightly
retaining the hand drawn look I wanted.
For the backgroundsIused the square and line tools to map
out my paneldesign firstly, then usingthe paint tool to draw the
ground lineand filling this section in with the fill tool. With the sky I
would do the same, addingtexture with the differenttextured
paintbrushtools available. There was a grass paintbrush that I
believed wasvery effective and also a texture that worked wellas
clouds. I also added in further details such as blossom trees and
mountainsthat I rotoscoped. With the blossom trees I used a soft
paintbrushtool with a lower opacity to give the desired look to the
blossom.
I have tried not to overusetext in my graphic novel, only
usingit when I feel it is necessary for explainingan image, one that
wouldn’tmakesense without a written explanation.
In the photo above I believed the meaningof the message
would nothave been clear without the text explainingwhat it was,
and so I included the further explanation to ensurethe message gets
across to the audience.
In other instances I have used speech bubbles, I believe
these aid the explanation of the image, but also add character to the
peoplein a graphic novelas the reader can see what they are saying
themselves.
The way the audiencecan see the Dragon Kinglaughing as he
believes he is about to kill the samuraimakeshim look evil and
makes it clear he is bad, making the reader take the side of the hero
even more.
In my graphic novelI used some symbolism to get across the
meaningof my images easier. For example colourswerequite
importantand I chose them carefully; one of the dragons I decided to
have red, a colour with strong connotationsof danger, showingthat
the dragonsare dangerouseand evil. I also used gold for the dragon
king, emperor and princess, acolour that connotesroyalty and makes
their status clear to a reader. I included other small details such as
the emperor havinggrey hair, a clue that he is old now but also
something that shows he is very wise. This
symbolism is something often donein Asian
stories.
My work representsthe gendersin quite a traditional
manner, the men being the ones who fight and a man having to
rescue the girl. This could be seen now as an outdated and sexist
approachto a story but as I am re-telling a traditional tale I believe
there wasno real way of avoidingthis. When the emperor is older, he
still goes out to be re-united with his daughter and isn’t portrayed as
being unable to do anything because of his age, so in this way I
believe the elderly are represented well.
I adapted the original tale quite a lot to make it suit the
formatI wasworkingwith and be moreexciting to read and view.
For examplethe original tale doesn’thave any fight scenes and so
isn’t incredibly exciting. The originalintroduction tells of a fisherman
who findsthe “bottomless hole” and falls in, discoveringthe land
below. I believed this didn’tadd muchto the story and cutting it
would allow me to create an alternative beginning with the
abduction, war and discovery of the hole by the samuraisixteen
years later.
I believe that duringmy production maintained agood
balance between using technology and manually drawingmy images.
This produced thelook I was aiming for and some professional
looking images.
The quality of some of my hand drawingswasn’tas good as
some of the others and I believe this pulled down the overallquality
of my work. The reason behind this could be my artistic skill in
general and me notbeing up to drawingvery good images every
time, but also the deadlinemay have had me rushingto finish
drawingson one or two occasions.
I think I used technology effectively makinguse of the
scanner to get my images on the computer and then usingPhotoshop
to digitally enhance the drawingsand add colour etc.
I believe I wasvery creative with my work as I tried to use
differentideas for things like the appearanceof my characters.
