Matthew 23:23 Woe to you,
scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
For you pay tithe of mint and
anise and cummin, and have
neglected the weightier matters of
the law: justice and mercy and
faith. These you ought to have
done, without leaving the others
undone.
SINS OF
SINS OF OMISSION
A. “These you ought to have done, without leaving the
others undone.” Sins of omission.
B. We’ve looked at 2 Timothy 3:1-5 and Romans 1:28-
32 and the sins of omission listed therein.
Unthankful? Unholy?
Unloving? Unforgiving?
Uncontrolled? Unrighteous?
Unmerciful? Undiscerning?
Untrustworthy?
C. Now we will look at other scriptures and sins of
omission.
D. All of these sins of omission would make good
resolutions for the New Year (not to do).
E. The “un” prefix means “not”.
I. DON'T BE UNFAITHFUL
A. Proverbs 11:6 The righteousness of the upright will
deliver them, But the unfaithful will be caught by
their lust.
B. Proverbs 2:21-22 For the upright will dwell in the
land, And the blameless will remain in it; (22) But
the wicked will be cut off from the earth, And the
unfaithful will be uprooted from it.
C. FAITHFUL TIL DEATH - (Rev 2:10) "Do not fear any of
those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed,
the devil is about to throw some of you into prison,
that you may be tested, and you will have
tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I
will give you the crown of life.
II. DON'T BE UNFRUITFUL
A. Matthew 13:22 Now he who received seed among the
thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this
world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and
he becomes unfruitful.
B. Titus 3:14 And let our people also learn to maintain good
works, to meet urgent needs, that they may not be
unfruitful.
C. 2 Peter 1:5-8 (5) But also for this very reason, giving all
diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, (6)
to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to
perseverance godliness, (7) to godliness brotherly
kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. (8) For if these
things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren
nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
III. DON’T BE UNWORTHY
A. Acts 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold
and said, "It was necessary that the word of God
should be spoken to you first; but since you
reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of
everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.
B. Ephesians 4:1-3 I, therefore, the prisoner of the
Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling
with which you were called, (2) with all lowliness
and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with
one another in love, (3) endeavoring to keep the
unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
IV. DON’T BE UNBELIEVING
A. Hebrews 3:12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any
of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the
living God;
B. Hebrews 3:18-19 And to whom did He swear that
they would not enter His rest, but to those who did
not obey? (19) So we see that they could not enter
in because of unbelief.
C. Revelation 21:7-8 He who overcomes shall inherit
all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My
son. (8) But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable,
murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters,
and all liars shall have their part in the lake which
burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second
death."
V. DON’T BE UNAWARE
1 Corinthians 10:1-13 Moreover, brethren, I do not
want you to be unaware that all our fathers were
under the cloud, all passed through the sea, (2) all
were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,
(3) all ate the same spiritual food, (4) and all drank
the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that
spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was
Christ. (5) But with most of them God was not well
pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the
wilderness. (6) Now these things became our
examples, to the intent that we should not lust after
evil things as they also lusted. (7) And do not become
idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, "The
people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to
play.“ >>>
V. DON’T BE UNAWARE
(8) Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of
them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell;
(9) nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also
tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; (10) nor
complain, as some of them also complained, and
were destroyed by the destroyer. (11) Now all these
things happened to them as examples, and they were
written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of
the ages have come. (12) Therefore let him who
thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. (13) No
temptation has overtaken you except such as is
common to man; but God is faithful, who will not
allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able,
but with the temptation will also make the way of
escape, that you may be able to bear it.
VI. DON’T BE UNCLEAN
A. 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 Do not be unequally yoked
together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has
righteousness with lawlessness? And what
communion has light with darkness? (15) And what
accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a
believer with an unbeliever? (16) And what
agreement has the temple of God with idols? For
you are the temple of the living God. As God has
said: "I will dwell in them And walk among them. I
will be their God, And they shall be My people." (17)
Therefore "Come out from among them And be
separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is
unclean, And I will receive you." (18) "I will be a
Father to you, And you shall be My sons and
daughters, Says the LORD Almighty."
VI. DON’T BE UNCLEAN
B. Ephesians 5:1-7 Therefore be imitators of God as
dear children. (2) And walk in love, as Christ also has
loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a
sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. (3) But
fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let
it not even be named among you, as is fitting for
saints; (4) neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor
coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather
giving of thanks. (5) For this you know, that no
fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who
is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of
Christ and God. (6) Let no one deceive you with
empty words, for because of these things the wrath
of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. (7)
Therefore do not be partakers with them.
VII. DON’T BE UNGODLY
A. Romans 1:16-18 For I am not ashamed of the gospel
of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for
everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for
the Greek. (17) For in it the righteousness of God is
revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just
shall live by faith." (18) For the wrath of God is
revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in
unrighteousness,
B. Titus 2:11-12 For the grace of God that brings
salvation has appeared to all men, (12) teaching us
that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we
should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the
present age,
VIII. DON’T BE UNJUST
A. 2 Peter 2:9-11 then the Lord knows how to deliver
the godly out of temptations and to reserve the
unjust under punishment for the day of judgment,
(10) and especially those who walk according to the
flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority.
They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not
afraid to speak evil of dignitaries, (11) whereas
angels, who are greater in power and might, do not
bring a reviling accusation against them before the
Lord.
B. Matthew 23:23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and
cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of
the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought
to have done, without leaving the others undone.
