LJCConf 2013 "Contributing to OpenJDK for the GitHub Generation"Daniel Bryant With the rise of github and the recent move of the Eclipse foundation to a social coding model, more and more people are wondering why participation in OpenJDK (the open source reference implementation of Java SE) isn’t keeping up with the times. A small group of people from the LJC and Adopt OpenJDK are trying to solve this problem by building Betterrev.
Betterrev is a platform that enables social participation in Openjdk, that works by hooking up repositories into Atlassian Bitbucket - ‘Github for mercurial’. Its goal is reduce barriers to entry and participation in OpenJDK. Down the line we’re hoping to tie into a build and test platform, so that community contributors can have their patches tested on any system from a macbook air, to an IBM mainframe.

In particular, Scala created a core of highly-motivated supporters in the so-called Reactive System area and in the Big Data domain.
In this talk we are going to describe how we evolved in CrowdMix from an initial implementation of the system based on Java8 to one mostly implemented in Scala. The talk will also describe how we evolved from a traditional service design to a highly scalable reactive system.
Although this could be possibly considered a less-common and simpler case than the majority of monolith legacy Java system conversions, there is a set of lessons learned that we would like to share.
In particular we will describe:
- How we approached the transition, what worked well, what didn’t
- Handling the coexistence of the two languages in the same service and across services
- What did we gain with the transition, what did we lose

Introducing Scala to your Ruby/Java Shop : My experiences at IGNManish Pandit With the move to SOA, IGN's API engineering became a traditional Java/Ruby shop. We introduced Scala to the team in August '11. As of April '12 we have our major services running on Scala, and we could not be happier. I'll talk about the strategic & tactical rationale, gradual introduction to the new language, cultivating experts and mentoring junior developers. We will also cover the common roadblocks the leaders may run into, addressing the concerns of engineers and stakeholders, and building an engineering culture that facilitates innovation and talent growth. Please note that this talk is not a Ruby/Java/Scala religious debate - we believe in using the best tool for the job; and what works for us may not work for every org (which is where the culture comes in). My team's journey from "Holy crap! This looks academic and scary!" to "Let me whip out a service by EOD today" in a matter of months is something I am very proud of, and would love to share it with fellow developer community.
