1. Raise the bucket. Install cylinder lock (1).
2. Remove nuts (3) and fender (2). Place suitable cribbing (4) between the front axle and the
frame on each side of the machine. This will keep the front axle from oscillating.
3. Loosen lug nuts (5). Do not remove lug nuts (5) at this time.

4. Use Tooling (A) in order to raise the machine. Position Tooling (B) under the frame of the
machine. Use Tooling (A) in order to lower the machine onto Tooling (B).
5. Attach a suitable lifting device to the tire and rim (6). The combined weight of the tire and
rim (6) is approximately 70 kg (155 lb). Remove lug nuts (5) and remove the tire and rim
(6).
Installation Procedure

C 222-3123 Penetrating Oil 1
1. Attach a suitable lifting device to the tire and rim (6). The combined weight of the tire and
rim (6) is approximately 70 kg (155 lb). Install the tire and rim (6).

Note: Ensure that all of the studs and lug nuts (5) are clean and dry.
2. Apply one drop of Tooling (C) to the threads of lug nuts (5). Install lug nuts (5). Do not
tighten lug nuts (5) at this time.
3. Use Tooling (A) in order to raise the machine. Remove Tooling (B) from the frame of the
machine. Use Tooling (A) in order to lower the machine onto the ground.
4. Install fender (2) and nuts (3). Remove suitable cribbing (4).

5. Tighten lug nuts (5) to a torque of 190 ± 40 N·m (140 ± 30 lb ft). Then, turn lug nuts (5) by
an additional 60° ± 5°.
6. Remove cylinder lock (1). Lower the bucket to the ground.

Start By:
a. Remove the front tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Front)
-Remove and Install".

1. Loosen nut (1) from tie rod (2).
2. Loosen nut (3).
3. Use Tooling (A) in order to disconnect tie rod (2). Remove nut (1) and remove tie rod (2).

1. Install tie rod (2).
2. Install nut (1). Tighten nut (1) to a torque of 220 + 11, − 33 N·m (162 + 8, − 24 lb ft).
3. Tighten nut (3) to a torque of 250 + 12, − 37 N·m (184 + 9, − 27 lb ft).
End By:
a. Install the front tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Front) -
Remove and Install".

Steering Cylinder (Front) - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure
Start By:
a. Remove the front axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive and Steering Axle
(Front) - Remove".
b. Remove both tie rods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tie Rod (Steering) (Front) -

1. Remove bolts (1) and remove steering cylinder (2).

1. Install steering cylinder (2). Apply Tooling (A) to the threads of bolts (1). Install bolts (1).
Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 460 ± 23, − 69 N·m (340 + 17, − 51 lb ft).
End By:
a. Install both tie rods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tie Rod (Steering) (Front) -
b. Install the front axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive and Steering Axle (Front)
- Install".

Final Drive Planetary - Remove

Removal Procedure
Start By:
a. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel and Tire - Remove
and Install".
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Drain the oil from the final drive planetary into a suitable container for storage or disposal.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive Planetary (Axle) Oil - Change".

a. Remove the final drive planetary. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive

1. Use Tooling (A) and remove retaining ring (1). Remove thrust washer (2), lock rings (3),
thrust washers (4), bearing (5) and planetary gear (6).
2. Repeat Step 1 for the remaining planetary gear assemblies.

Note: Position the taper (X) of bearing (5) as shown.
1. Position planetary gear (6) on a flat surface. Install one thrust washer (4) and one locking
ring (3) . Install bearing (5) into planetary gear (6) . Install the remaining thrust washer (4)
and the remaining locking ring (3) . Install planetary gear (6) and the components into the
planetary carrier assembly. Install thrust washer (2) . Use Tooling (A) and install retaining
ring (1) .
2. Repeat Step 1 for the remaining planetary gear assemblies.

End By: Install the final drive planetary. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive
Planetary - Install".

1. Position planetary carrier assembly (3) onto wheel flange (1). Install screws (2). Tighten
screws (2) to a torque of 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
2. Fill the final drive planetary with oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual,
"Capacities (Refill)" and refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive
Planetary (Axle) Oil - Change".
End By:
a. Install the wheel and the tire. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel and Tire -

1. Install Tooling (A) under guard (2) . Remove bolts (1) . Repeat for the other side. Use
Tooling (A) in order to lower guard (2) to the ground. The weight of guard (2) is
approximately 38 kg (85 lb).
2. Remove bolts (3) .
3. Remove bolts (5) and remove front drive shaft (4) .

1. Install front drive shaft (4) and install new bolts (5) . Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 28 ± 7

2. Use Tooling (C) in order to position Tooling (A) under the rear of the machine.

3. Use Tooling (C) in order to raise the front of the machine. Position Tooling (B) under the
front of the machine.
4. Remove the front tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Front)
- Remove and Install".
5. Remove the counterweight. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Counterweight - Remove
and Install".
6. Disconnect hose assembly (2). Repeat for the opposite side of the machine.
7. Remove bolt (3).
