Education - systematic process through which a child or
an adult - acquires knowledge, experience, skill and sound

It makes individual - civilized, refined, cultured.
• Begins(birth)-continues throughout life
• Womb to grave
• Whatever broadens our horizons, deepens our
insight, refines our reactions and stimulates our
thoughts and feelings --educates us.
• GANDHIJI--”By Education I mean an all round
drawing out the best in the child and man-
body, mind and spirit”
• “DRAWING OUT”-- Education is NOT poring
in, realize the child's potential and capacities
• “BEST IN CHILD AND MAN”--education should
cater to Body , Mind and Spirit
• NARROW CONCEPT OF EDUCATION
• Schooling and university instruction.
• Success is evaluated in terms of passing of examinations
• Deliberate, purposeful planned efforts by teacher to
impart knowledge
• Definite curriculum
• Latin words Educare, Educere, and Educatum.
• Educare means to nourish, to bring up, "to raise“/ to train or to
mold/rear
• Educere means to lead forth, to draw out, "to come out" "bring
out", "bring forth what is within", "bring outpotential" and
• Forth means out and away from a starting point/onwards in time.
• “Educatum”, which itself is composed of two
terms, “e” and “duco”.
• ‘E’ implies a movement from inward to out word
and “duco” means developing or progressing.
• According to some learned people, the word
"Education" has been derived from the Latin
term "Educatum" which means the act of
teaching or training.
• Two prominent words is sanskrit stand out as
equivalents of terms education are “ shiksha”
and “vidya”.
• Shiksha word derived from “shah” meaning to

• TAGORE-- ” Education means enabling the mind to find out the Ultimate truth
which makes one's life in harmony with all existence”.
• AUROBINDO -- ” Education is helping the growing soul to draw out that is in
itself”.
• VIVEKANAND-- “Education is the manifestation of the divine perfection, already
existing in man."
• TAGORE--"The widest road leading to the solution of all our problems is
education."
• PESTALOZZI -- “ Education is Natural, Harmonious and Progressive development
of mans innate powers”
• ARISTOTLE -- ” Education is creation of sound mind in a sound body”
• The Indian concept of education stresses on human capacities i.e. Mental,
Moral, Social , physical and intellectual.
• The Western Concept Stresses On The Growth And Development Of The
Individual In Relation To His Environment.
• Indian nation is striving to build society of humane, committed,
participative ,productive citizens who can shoulder task of building
enlightened, strong and prosperous country.
• Education always played important role in shaping destinies of societies
through development of whole individual and linking education to task
of social upliftment and national development within a highly
competitive global scenario.
• Modern India is multi-cultural ; multi-lingual society with undercurrent
of essential unity.

achieving goals of economic development, technological progress
and also for establishing social cohesion.
- tends to create a social order based on values of freedom, social

leads to reduction in poverty, ignorance, oppression and war.

• Education, by its very nature, influences and gets
influenced by total development process.

tune with the changing needs, aspirations and

Thus, education and society are interdependent and
each reinforces the other.
• According to John Dewey ‘Education is not a
preparation for life but life itself’. In this sense
education and life are inseparable.

• Main aim of education is the development of child. Psychology
helps to understand the child better and development of child
with respect of physical, mental, emotional,
adjustment, individual difference, personality,

thinking,
reasoning, problem solving.

• A child lives in the society so its important for him to know
about the society the nature of society, type of society,
interdependence between culture and society.
