This document summarizes research on managerial challenges facing healthcare professionals. A survey of 182 healthcare managers in Canada investigated obstacles to effective leadership, performance, and job satisfaction. The study assessed 5 potential "drivers" of management challenges: rules, emotions, initiatives, immediate action, and integrity.
The results showed that emotions-related obstacles, like resistance to change and lack of employee commitment, were viewed as the most significant challenge by respondents. Managers also saw issues related to immediate action, like unresolved emergencies, as obstacles. Younger managers were found to be more productive than those with over 20 years of experience.
