Millennium Fellowship Round 2 - 2025
What is the name of your Project? (We
recommend you keep it under 5 words)
Health and Hygiene Awareness Campaign
What stage is your Project at? Ongoing: this is a project I am currently working
on
Briefly describe your project in an easy-to-
understand way! (Hint: avoid buzzwords. Thus,
write as if you were telling a friend.)
The project will educate children in schools about
the importance of maintaining good health and
hygiene focused on teaching practical skills that
students can adopt to stay healthy. It will base on
participatory health talks with sessions where
students shall be engaged on hand washing, oro-
dental care, menstrual hygiene and preventive
measures of diseases especially Malaria,
Cholera, diarrhea, and cough. It will feature
learning methods especially peer-to-peer
discussions on mental health issues, health skits
on adolescent sexual and reproductive health
and also providing a safer platform that
encourage students to ask questions and
experience sharing. School and community
cleanup events involving installation of dustbins,
hand washing facilities and promotion of proper
waste management culture among the students
and the entire community shall considered. And
since such a project needs support and has to be
sustained, we shall ensure collaboration and
participation of parents and teachers since they
spend even more time with these students
health can help in guidance. According to pilot
study, 7 in 10 girls reach menace without
menstrual knowledge; This project will ensure
girls gain confidence by learning about menstrual
hygiene and management. They will learn
personal hygiene and become ambassadors of
health in their communities.
What is your role in this project? Founder/Co-Founder
What is the project's structure in relation to your
Millennium Fellowship application?
Group project: Some or all team members are
also applying for the Fellowship.
How many lives will be positively impacted by
your Project during the Millennium Fellowship
(from August 2025 to November 2025)?
1001-2000
Do you have a specific number of the projected
number of lives that will be positively impacted
by your Project? Please write it below (optional)
2800
How will you measure your impact during these 4
months? How do you know you've been
successful? Please share a quantifiable goal, for
example, "we will host 3 events each reaching
100 people...", "we will raise $5,000 to support
our partner organization...", etc.
We aim to sensitize and educate 2,000
individuals as direct beneficiaries among which
50 will be peer educators and ambassadors of
health who will reach out to atleast 800 indirect
beneficiaries of proper health and hygiene
practices through health talks and participatory
sessions. We intend to achieve 30% increase on
proper hand washing, 40% increase on
menstrual hygiene knowledge, and 15%
decrease on diseases related to poor sanitation
and hygiene. This shall be achieved through pre
and post awareness assessment surveys to
assess the students' knowledge, accessibility
and utilization of hand washing facilities,
menstrual hygiene facilities. The assessments
shall be through feedback and observation of the
students' behavior during school hours to see if
they increase proper hand washing. We shall
also compare the attendance of students before
and after the campaign to identify the reduced
absenteeism due to avoidable illnesses and we
intend to achieve a 20% decrease. Doing this in
collaboration with the admiration of these schools
shall enable us measure the impact of our
awareness campaign to the school and
community.
Please choose one of the 17 Sustainable 3 Good Health and Well-being
Development Goals that your work most directly
addresses. Learn more about the SDGs here.
Which of the 10 UN Academic Impact Principles
is most applicable to your work? Read more
about the Principles here.
UNAI 2: Capacity Building
Social entrepreneur Bryan Stevenson has
emphasized the power of proximity - that you are
close to the people you are trying to help. As
Stevenson shares, It's actually “in proximity to
[injustices] that we hear things that we won't
otherwise hear, that we'll see things we won't
otherwise see.” With this in mind: Are you part of
the community you are trying to help, or have
you built meaningful relationships with
community members? Who are the direct
audience or target group(s) you are trying to
impact? If this is not possible, please explain the
research and preparatory work you have done to
feel confident that you understand the
complexities of the issues you are addressing.
Yes, I am part of the I am trying to impact. This
enables me to align my project and interventions
with the community problems since I am
experienced with lived examples and cultural
perspectives of the community. There are
barriers to health and hygiene practices
especially inadequate knowledge, inaccessibility,
misinformation and stigma associated with low
education levels, poverty, gender inequality and
inadequate infrastructure. The knowledge about
these social problems enables me to embark on
sustainable impacts through inclusive
empowerment, training peer educators that
become ambassadors of health and hygiene in
communities rather than surface level solutions.
As part of the UN global goals, a passionate
team of the prestigious Millennium Fellows from
Kampala International University Western
Campus has added a great stone as far as
achieving SDG 3: Good health and well-being
SDG 4: Quality education for all in concerned.
The team coordinated by Bwambale Isaac
reached out to 2,000 students from 10 schools
around Bushenyi, Sheema and Mitooma districts,
South western Uganda who were educated on
vital hygiene practices such as proper hand
washing, menstrual hygiene, sanitation, mental
health and disease prevention. The assessments
done showed a 30% increase in adoption to
proper hand washing and sanitation habits
making a significant achievement of reducing
preventable diseases. The project that was

supported by the millennium fellowship's global
network of young leaders brought together
participants from diverse backgrounds to
collaborate and take action on the pressing
health challenges. Fellows worked closely with
local schools, community leaders and health care
workers to spread the awareness and provide
practical tools for improving hygiene. "The
community engagement and sustainable
improvements in hygiene practices shows the
power of education and collective actions. We
call upon the community leaders and to base on
this as they maintain the record." Isaac said
Are you able to commit 2 hours bi-weekly to
attend the Fellowship sessions throughout the
duration of the 2025 program (August 1 -
November 30)?
Yes
Do you plan to be on-campus for the duration of
the 2025 Fellowship (August 1 - November 30)?
Yes
Q1: What personal experiences have shaped
your interest in creating social impact? In other
words, why do you personally care about the
issues you are working on or planning to work
on? Tell us what drives you in your work. We
want to hear your story
I would like to TYPE my response
Knowing that several children spend most their
times at schools and health of these children in
school going age has remained poor especially
in rural areas. My interest is rooted in witnessing
first-hand effects of basic health education on
school going children. Growing up in a
community where children attending to schools
have limited access to not only healthcare but
also sanitation and hygiene, where a thousand
faced preventable health illnesses associated
with lack of awareness about hygiene practices.
Please type your response to the above question
here
This grew my passion and sense of responsibility
to address the issue since I recognize that
education on health and hygiene is crucial for
well-being of children especially in schools where
they spend most of their times and habits are
leaned from there. Health related conditions that
are preventable by proper hygiene can hinder
performance, limit opportunities, and affect long
term success of learners thus by improving the
health and hygiene awareness, we can reduce
absenteeism, promote better learning outcomes
and foster healthier and happier communities of
young generation. Health and hygiene is not just
a matter of education but rather a comprehensive
issue of human digital, equality and opportunity
for every child. During my pilot study on school
health assessment, 7 in 10 students had no
knowledge about menstrual hygiene before
menace, and accessibility and utilization were
inadequate which sparked the increased
prevalence of preventable diseases especially
diarrhea, cold cough, ulcers, typhoid malaria
among others. By the end of the assessment
several students had gained confidence in
speaking about school health issues, had
practiced proper sanitation which proved to me
that if this program is extended to several
learners it would cause a significant and...
... radical sustainable change.
Q2: Why do you want to be a Millennium Fellow?
How will you use this distinction towards your
future social impact work?
I would like to TYPE my response

collaboration respectively, becoming a

Millennium Campus Network aligns with my
values of working towards positive change in
communities especially areas such as education,
sustainability and social justice and this is the
community I have always wanted to be part of.
Being a Millennium fellow will further provide me
with access to a global network of passionate
individuals, mentorship and the tools necessary
to scale my efforts in creating lasting societal
change. It will empower me to amplify my current
work by providing additional resources, training,
and connections to individuals and organizations
dedicated to similar objectives of sustainable
transformation. It will further help me to improve
my leadership skills, development of effective
and winning strategies and also build stronger
collaborations with other change makers across
the globe. Being part of the prestigious
Millennium fellowship team, I will increase the
impact of my campaign and continue advocating
for systematic change especially in communities
that are affected with socioeconomic challenges.
I believe, the millennium fellow distinction will
help me grow as a leader, equipping me to
address the Sustainable Development Goals in a
more focused and informed way as well as
continuing to strive for and inclusive, equitable
and sustainable future through grooming the
young leaders who will later become change
makers and ambassadors of social impacts.
Q3: MCN values that our community prioritizes
empathetic, humble, inclusive leadership. Reflect
upon your personal experience of acting as a
leader, and share how you demonstrated one of
these core values.

institutions of learning, I have had opportunities
to engage with diverse groups of individuals from
different cultures to address sensitive issues and
fostering and environment of respect and
understanding. I always acknowledge the fact
that leadership requires integrity, empathy,
humility and inclusivity which are values I
prioritize in every engagement I have. One of the
moments I demonstrated inclusive leadership
was by creating a safe and welcoming space for
students to share their experiences and
perspective on sexual harassment during when
we come up with referral pathways. Recognizing
that sexual harassment affects individuals
differently based on their gender, backgrounds,
and personal experience, I ensured that all
voices were heard. I made it a point to actively
listen, validate their feelings and ensure no one
felt marginalized. Through this effort, I learned
that inclusive leadership is not about having all
the answers, but about creating spaces where
everyone feels empowered to contribute and
where collective learning can occur. This
experience has deepened my commitment to
fostering empathy and inclusivity in my
leadership practices, the values I can't leave
behind in my future social impact works.

position where you had to work with someone on

Yes, besides collaboration being my last core
value, I have had several experiences working
collaboratively with peers on the same level and
they have not only been rewarding but also
enlightening. The most notable moment was
during my leadership as a peer educator on
sexual harassment, where I worked closely with
fellow students to design and facilitate
discussions around sensitive topics, awareness
campaigns especially the 'Zero tolerance to
sexual harassment' that attracted almost the
entire campus and workshops. The experience
was basically incredible for it involved high
degree of mutual respect, open communication
as well as shared commitment to our goals. We
each brought our unique though and skills,
intertwined them, the thing that enriched our
collective understanding of the issues and
enabled us to approach it from different
dimensions. I remember most peers had strong
event planning skills while others were more
comfortable in facilitating discussions and
mobilization.

  • 5. This grew my passion and sense of responsibility to address the issue since I recognize that education on health and hygiene is crucial for well-being of children especially in schools where they spend most of their times and habits are leaned from there. Health related conditions that are preventable by proper hygiene can hinder performance, limit opportunities, and affect long term success of learners thus by improving the health and hygiene awareness, we can reduce absenteeism, promote better learning outcomes and foster healthier and happier communities of young generation. Health and hygiene is not just a matter of education but rather a comprehensive issue of human digital, equality and opportunity for every child. During my pilot study on school health assessment, 7 in 10 students had no knowledge about menstrual hygiene before menace, and accessibility and utilization were inadequate which sparked the increased prevalence of preventable diseases especially diarrhea, cold cough, ulcers, typhoid malaria among others. By the end of the assessment several students had gained confidence in speaking about school health issues, had practiced proper sanitation which proved to me that if this program is extended to several learners it would cause a significant and... ... radical sustainable change. I always acknowledge the fact that leadership requires integrity, empathy, humility and inclusivity which are values I prioritize in every engagement I have. One of the moments I demonstrated inclusive leadership was by creating a safe and welcoming space for students to share their experiences and perspective on sexual harassment during when we come up with referral pathways. Recognizing that sexual harassment affects individuals differently based on their gender, backgrounds, and personal experience, I ensured that all voices were heard. I made it a point to actively listen, validate their feelings and ensure no one felt marginalized. Through this effort, I learned that inclusive leadership is not about having all the answers, but about creating spaces where everyone feels empowered to contribute and where collective learning can occur. This experience has deepened my commitment to fostering empathy and inclusivity in my leadership practices, the values I can't leave behind in my future social impact works.
