Measurement of blood pressure presents many issues and challenges. Hypertension is often asymptomatic, so many people are unaware they have it. Globally, awareness and treatment rates are low. In India, less than 11% of the 218 million adults with hypertension have it under control. Accurate diagnosis requires confirmation on two separate visits to account for potential errors from faulty equipment, improper measurement technique, and observer bias. Low-resource settings face challenges obtaining affordable and reliable blood pressure monitoring devices. The WHO aims to provide guidance on appropriate technologies and best practices for blood pressure measurement and hypertension diagnosis and management at different levels of healthcare.
