Research Program on Sustainability of Bioethanol:
            Socio Economic Impacts

                     Manoel Regis L.V. Leal
Arnaldo Walter, Joaquim Seabra, Marcelo Cunha
The
main
goals

   • The short term priority of this project is to focus on the
local impacts in the areas where the sugar cane and
ethanol production is taking place an on the social
groups directly involved with the production.
Short
term
research
lines

On the short term, there are four main research lines:
   a) Identification of the socio economic impacts – positives
and negatives – of the sugarcane and ethanol
production activities: evaluation will be based on the
quality of life and income distribution indicators in the
counties where the production is taking place.
   b) The same, but with the evaluation based on input-output
       matrix model.
   c) Identification of the impacts of the sugarcane and
ethanol production on a new area (no past production).
   d) Assessment of the working conditions in the sugarcane
       and ethanol production.
Who
will
do
the
work

   • Two first topics (a and b): CTBE group.
   • Two last topics (c and d): CTBE partners.

Questions
to
be
answered:
Topic
a

   •  Among the counties where sugarcane is an important
there are some that have better quality of life than the
others; which are the factors that explain these
     differences?
   • What are the impacts of the degree of production chain
integration (higher or lower concentration of the cane
production) on the quality of life indicators?
   • What are the impacts on the quality of life indicators
from diversification of the economic activities in the area
(degree of importance of sugarcane as an economic
     activity)?
Questions
to
be
answered:
Topic
b

   • Can input – output matrix models provide reliable
results in the evaluation of sugarcane activities local
impacts? What is the highest level of space detailing
    that can be used?
   •
Is it possible to reproduce what happened in a certain
period of time? If yes, can the models be used to predict
the future expansions, with the displacement of other
    agriculture activities?
   •
Can future changes in the production process be
introduced and simulated in the model?
Topics
c
and
d

The partnerships to cover these topics are still being
discussed and some details may be presented during
the workshop by the potential partners.
First
year
results

   • Topic a results for the States of São Paulo, Goiás and
     Alagoas.
   • Some preliminary results from the input – output matrix
     model results.
