Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) uses fluid replacement to prevent and treat dehydration caused by diarrhea. Glucose in ORS enhances intestinal absorption of salt and water, correcting electrolyte and water deficits in all age groups. Reduced osmolarity ORS contains sodium, chloride, glucose, potassium, and citrate. It is prepared by mixing one packet of ORS with one liter of clean water. ORS should be administered frequently in small amounts to rehydrate patients showing signs of dehydration like dry mouth and sunken eyes.
