ORS
DEFINITION
• Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is a type of fluid replacement used to
prevent and treat dehydration, especially that due to diarrhea.
PRINCIPLE
 Glucose when given orally enhances the intestinal absorption of salt
& water. Thus it can correct electrolyte & water deficit.
 It can be given to all age group people.
CONTENTS

/litre
Reduced osmolarity ORS mmol/

BEFORE ADMINISTRATION
 Ask and collect the history and information from the patient and his
relatives regarding diarrhea- duration, frequency, appearance,
consistency, color, smell, present of blood.
 Vomiting
 Thirst
 Urine output
 Look for signs of dehydration – presence or absent of tear, dry mouth
and tongue, frontanele, sunken eye, dry skin, rapid pulse,
temperature, loss of weight, rapid breathing, etc.
PREPARATION AND ADMINISTRATION
 Wash your hands with soap and water before preparing solution.
 Prepare a solution, in a clean pot, by mixing 1 packet of Oral
Rehydration Salts (ORS) with one litre of clean drinking water.
 Stir the mixture till all the contents dissolve.
 Wash your hands and the baby's hands with soap and water before
feeding solution.
 Give the sick child as much of the solution as it needs, in small amounts
frequently.
 Give child alternately other fluids - such as breast milk and juices.
PREPARATION OF ORS AT HOME

•Add 2 finger pinch of salt, stir it.
•Taste a spoon full of the solution, it should not be more salty than
tears.
•Add a large fistful of sugar
•Stir the mixture with clean spoon till the sugar has dissolved
•Give ¼ to ½ cup (50-100ml) of this mixture after each loose stool to
the child less than 2 years of age and twice the amount in children
above 2 years of age.
