UNIT V : SUPPORTIVE SERVICES IN HOSPITAL
5.1 Planning for Supportive Services
- medical gases, HVAC, housekeeping,
CSSD, Food and beverages
Supportive Services in Hospital
• They support the work carried out by
the doctors and nurses
• These Services usually work at the
back end but their contribution in
the overall care of a patient is
no where less than that of the
clinical services. E.g.
Supportive Services in Hospital
• The overall patient satisfaction
greatly depends on the quality of
hospital supportive services
rendered
& so …An administrator needs an
ability to increase the efficiency and
utilization of staff to meet the
workload.
• Support services
- Food and Nutrition Services to patients
- Medical Records
- Pathology
- Blood bank
- Radiology - Nuclear Medicine -
Radiotherapy Department
Supportive Services in Hospital
• Support services
- Material Management
- Central Sterile Services
Maintaining cleanliness in the hospital
(Environmental services)
- Equipment distribution
Supportive Services in Hospital
• Support services
- IT
- Mortuary
- Ambulance
- Biomed/clinical engineering
- Pharmacy
Supportive Services in Hospital
CSSD - Central Sterile Services Department
• Performs sterilization/other actions
on medical devices, equipment
and consumables; for
subsequent use by health
workers.
Supportive Services in Hospital
CSSD - Central Sterile Services Department
• Laundry services are important
in ensuring the collection and
cleaning of soiled linen,
processing for subsequent use.
Supportive Services in Hospital
CSSD - Central Sterile Services Department
• Maintenance of grounds, equipment
and buildings is vital
Supportive Services in Hospital
Types Of Medical Gases Used In Hospitals
Medical Air
• Refers to a clean supply of compressed air
used in hospitals and healthcare facilities to
distribute medical gas.
• It is free of contamination and particles, has no
oil or odors, and is dry to prevent water buildup
in the facility's pipeline.
• When a patient is in the operating room, whether
it's an emergency or not, a surgeon relies on a
medical air compressor to keep the patient
comfortable and breathing.
Supportive Services in Hospital
Types Of Medical Gases Used In Hospitals
Oxygen
• Medical gas required in every healthcare
setting, and is used for resuscitation and
inhalation therapy.
• Carbon Dioxide
a medical gas for less invasive surgeries like
laparoscopy, arthroscopy, endoscopy,
Supportive Services in Hospital
Types Of Medical Gases Used In Hospitals
Nitrogen (Medical Liquid Nitrogen)
• a medical gas used for cryosurgery removal of
some cancers and skin lesions, and also for the
storage of tissues, cells, and blood in cryogenic
temperatures to avoid oxidation of the samples.
Nitrous Oxide
• medical gas commonly known as "laughing gas“.
This medical gas is used in numerous surgical
procedures as both an anesthetic and analgesic.
Supportive Services in Hospital
Types Of Medical Gases Used In Hospitals
• The hospital should always take medical gases
supply from an agency with license to do so.
• Ensure staff in their charge receive
appropriate training specific to the
compressed gases they are handling and
using;
• Wear proper Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE) when performing lab operations/tasks
involving compressed gases
Supportive Services in Hospital
Types Of Medical Gases Used In Hospitals
• Cylinders must always be secured to a trolley
when being transported
• Gas cylinders should always be used in a
vertical position
• Gas cylinders should not be stored for
excessive periods of time.
Supportive Services in Hospital
Materials management
• Planning, purchasing and controlling the flow
of materials within an organization.
• Controls and maintain an uninterrupted
supply of materials from the time the hospital
acquires them to the time of disposal.
• Thus suitable use of the material & wastage is
reduced.
• So basics …
Supportive Services in Hospital
The 5 primary objectives are:
1. Right time
2. Right material
3. Right amount
4. Right price
5. Right sources
& thus …
• Inventory planning is more important
• Assess/analyze/forecast the demand
• HVAC, housekeeping, CSSD, Food and
beverages,
HVAC
Heating, Ventilation, AC (HVAC)
• HVAC systems are playing a very
important role in hospitals , by
- maintaining temperature
- humidity control
- maintaining a germ-free environment
• Thus it is more than just …comfort
for patients and employees
HVAC
Heating, Ventilation, AC (HVAC)
• Important role esp.in ICU, preventing
infections as well.
• Some Medical equipment & Healthcare
facilities are sensitive to temperature and
humidity levels and requires perfect air
control to function accurately.
Housekeeping
• Hospitals are full of sick people
wanting to get better, so having the
cleanest surroundings possible is
crucial.
Housekeeping
• Germs like sickness & sickness likes germs!
So , they feed off each other.
• Keeping hospital rooms and common areas
clean with regular housekeeping services is
healthy for
patients,
visitors,
hospital staff.
Housekeeping
• Prevention & keep hospital free from
infections
• Housekeepers play an essential role in the
overall environmental health of a hospital.
• But …. Cleaning should happen before
disinfecting.
• Disinfectants are used to sanitize clean areas.
• Disinfection won’t be adequate if the cleaning
isn’t up to mark!
Food and beverages
• Diet is an essential part while recuperating
from a major illness or surgery.
• All leading hospitals provide nutritious and
healthy diet food based on the requirement of
the patient in the hospital itself.
Food and beverages
• The hospital catering services play a very
crucial role in providing suitable diet/ food.
• Hospital food environment Positively
influence the , thereby improving the dietary
intake of employees and visitors.
Food and beverages
• Healthy food
• Drinks (beverages) options
So, insist on
• certified ingredients
• efficient handling and distribution of meal orders
• expert management of food at appropriate
temperatures
• modern food preparation methods
• specialized human resources.
