PUBLIC VICTORY
HABIT 4 : THINK WIN-WIN
What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?
PRINCIPLE : Effective, long term relationships require mutual respect & mutual benefit
1. Win – Win : Lets find a solution that works for both of us.
2. Win – Lose : I am going to beat you no matter what.
3. Lose – Win : I always get stepped on.
4. Lose – Lose : If i am going down, you are going down with me.
5. Win : As long as i win, i don’t care if you win or loose.
6. Win- Win Or No Deal : Lets find a solution that works for
both of us, or lets not play.

HABIT 5 : SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND,
THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD
Listen or your tongue will make you deaf
PRINCIPLE : To communicate effective, we must first understand each other.
Empathetic
listening is
reflecting what a
person feels &
says in your own
words. It is not
listening to advise,
counsel, reply,
refute, solve, agree
etc.
HABIT 6 : SYNERGISE
The enemy of the best is the good.
PRINCIPLE : The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
YOUR WAY
MY WAY
Third
Alternative
Differences create synergy not conflict. As more synergy,
more ideas, more growth.
Leverage differences for better results.
SYNERGISING IS : SYNERGISING IS NOT :
Result oriented, positive energy A brainstorming free-for-all that leads
nowhere.
Examining, exploring, & seeking
different perspectives openly enough to
alter or complete your paradigm
Accepting other’s ideas as full truth.
Win-win cooperation Win-lose competition.
Having a mutual agreed-upon end in
mind.
Groupthink (giving in to peer pressure)
Worth the effort & highly effective. Always easy
A disciplined process. Just a negotiation technique

HABIT 7 : SHARPEN THE SAW
A long healthy & happy life is the result of making contributions of having
meaningful projects that are personally exciting & contribute to & bless the
lives of others
PRINCIPLE : To maintain & increase effectiveness, we must renew ourselves in body,
heart, mind & soul.
Sharpen the Saw is a daily process of renewing
for four dimensions of
our nature : Physical, Mental, Spiritual and Social
/ Emotional.
These four dimensions sustain and increase our
capacities and help us
discipline our mind, body and spirit. This daily
private victory is a
victory over self. Not only does the daily Private
victory stimulate growth,
but it also helps us to achieve the Public Victory.
As we achieve these
victories through renewal, we cultivate and
nurture the other six habits.
Questions you need to ask yourself
• Physical Dimension : Assume you’ve had a
heart attack in the last month. How would you
approach exercise & nutrition?
• Social / Emotional Dimension : Assume that
everything you say about people will be heard
by them. How might you choose your words
differently?
• Mental Dimension : Assume your knowledge
& skills will be obsolete in two years. What new
learning avenues would you explore?
• Spiritual Dimension : Assume you have a year
to live. What legacy would you want to leave ?
