• #15: Upgrade your hardware, server & database. Top reasons to upgrade: Current version may have some hard to diagnose bugs that are causing problems like outages or other impact to business. SQL Server Mainstream support ended on April 8, 2008. On April 9, 2013, Extended Support for SQL Server 2000 will come to an end, and SQL Server 2000 will no longer be supported. • #29: 911 system on-premises, 311 in the cloud to scale for major incidents, saving the city an estimated $900,000 per year Modernized and extended applications to new areas, not previously possible When the City of Miami wanted to update their mainframe-based 911 system, they opted for a Microsoft solution for its ability to make it easier to migrate mainframe applications to a hybrid environment—including on-premises and cloud. Now, when someone dials 911 in Miami, emergency personnel are dispatched from the system’s Windows Server, and data from the system is stored in a SQL Server database. The City was able to house the 911 system on-premises, while the 311 system resides in the cloud to scale for major incidents, saving an estimated $900,000 per year. The City was also able to modernize and extend applications to new areas, which was not possible with the previous system.

The new pricing and licensing offers a range of benefits for you and your customers: SQL Server 2012 offers market leading TCO: SQL Server 2012 continues to be the clear high-value leader among major vendors. Customers with Software Assurance will get significant benefits and ways to help ease the transition to new licensing models. Customers with Enterprise Agreements will have the easiest transition to SQL Server 2012, and they will realize the greatest cost savings. SQL Server 2012 is cloud-optimized: SQL Server 2012 is the most virtualization-friendly database, with simplified virtualization licensing, the flexibility to license per VM, and excellent support for Hyper-V. Customers also have the ability to support hybrid scenarios that span on-premises, private cloud, and public cloud. SQL Server 2012 pricing and licensing is designed to enable customers to pay as they grow: The new streamlined editions are aligned to database and business intelligence needs. For data center scenarios, licensing is better aligned to hardware capacity. For business intelligence, licensing is aligned to user-based access which is the way most customers are accustomed to purchasing BI.
• #31: Licensing changes for SQL Server 2012 This table provides an overview of the licensing changes for SQL Server 2012 editions, and some very basic rules of thumb to illustrate the fundamental pricing changes. Standard Edition will continue to be available through both Server/CAL and core-based licensing. The price of a SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition processor license will be worth 4 cores when purchasing the new version. There will be no change to the price of a Standard Edition server license. CAL pricing will increase. BI Edition will be available exclusively through Server/CAL licensing. This will be available for the same price as a SQL Server 2008 R2 server license. Enterprise Edition will now only be available through capacity-based licensing, which will now be measured using cores, not processors. Enterprise Edition server licenses will no longer be available for new purchases. The price of a SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition processor license will be worth 4 cores when purchasing the new version. (Note that cores will be sold in two-packs.) With the new pricing, Microsoft remains the high-value leader among the major vendors. As we will cover later in the training, customers with Software Assurance and Enterprise Agreements will have options available to help smooth the migration to the new pricing and licensing.
• #32: Licensing by cores provides your customers a way to pay for the power they need, with a predictable, consistent measure of hardware capacity. Capacity-based licensing, which is available for Enterprise and Standard Editions, is appropriate for database and data warehouse workloads and situations in which users are not easily counted. Why cores? Cores are more precise than processors for measuring compute power. They are a more fair method of measurement. And they are more easily translated and migrated to cloud or hosted deployments. How does licensing by hardware capacity work? For physical server licensing, licensing is based on the physical cores in use on the hardware. Processors covered under Software Assurance can upgrade to SQL 2012 at no additional cost. For virtual machine licensing, you can help your customers license individual virtual machines, licensing virtual cores through License Mobility with Software Assurance. Unlimited virtualization is also available with Enterprise Edition.
• #33: Licensing by user or device provides a predictable and consistent measure of capacity. Server/CAL licensing, available with BI and Standard Editions, is appropriate for business intelligence workloads and scenarios in which users can be counted accurately. Server/CAL licenses are an easier way to deploy BI solutions, and they provide alignment to SharePoint and Office. Physical server licenses are based on each individual server. Enterprise Edition servers covered under Software Assurance can be upgraded to SQL Server 2012 at no cost. Enterprise Edition units upgraded to SQL Server 2012 or bought after April 1st will have a 20 core maximum limit for the server. SQL Server 2012 edition CALs are also required for access.  Through License Mobility with Software Assurance, your customers can also license individual virtual machines based on virtual processors.
