THE HISTORY OF FILM
ORIGINS
• First Precursors of film:
• Kinematoscope(1861)
• Muybridge’s zoopraxiscope(1879)
• Louis Le Prince patents successive production of objects in
motion by means of a projector".(1886)
• The Arrival of a Train premiered on a large screen December 28,1895 at
the Grand Cafe in Paris, France. In the US, Woodville Latham combined a
Kinetoscope with a projecting device. People able to watch short motion
pictures. on Broadway in New York City.

THE SILENT ERA(1895-1929)
• By 1906, film plays a major role in the entertainment business.
• No sound in this movies– this was replaced with live music and performers, called
vaudeville
• Nitrate Film mostly used-EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE(lost movies)
• Big movies of the Era:
• Le voyage dans le Lune(1902)
• The Birth of a Nation(1915)
• The Hunchback on Notre Dame(1923)
• Rise of contemporary and symbolic
Movies occur in mid 1910s.

THE SOUND ERA- “TALKIES”(1927-1945)
• Started with The Jazz Singer (1927), the first feature-length talkies.
• Talkies helped make Hollywood the world’s premiere movie city
•First to use talkies on a large scale.
Also Changed the implications of movies because it made people
more keen on lstening rather than being able to talk during the movie.
Robert Sklar said in his book Movie Made America, "talking audiences
for silent pictures became a silent audience for talking pictures" (53).

-The Jazz Singer(1927)
-Don Juan(1926)
-Wizard of Oz(1939)
-Casa Blanca(1942)
-Citizen Kane(1941)
