This document proposes a national accreditation scheme for Australian museums. It begins by defining key terms like accreditation, standards, and quality assurance. It then reviews international museum accreditation schemes, particularly in the USA. Most schemes follow a three stage model of self-assessment, peer review, and ongoing self-regulation. There is growing interest in Australia and internationally in improving standards and ensuring proper care of collections. A national accreditation scheme could help raise standards, encourage cooperation between museums, and increase support from government and other stakeholders. The report makes recommendations for further developing the proposed scheme through negotiation and establishing a working group to research implementation.
